Do freckles develop on dogs?
Question: Hi My 3 yr old Yorkie-Pom has developed some freckles on top of her very blonde head. They look just like regular freckles- only they're pretty dark. But they're about the same size. She's got 2 "big" ones and one 'little" one I noticed them about a year ago when I was giving her a bath - I thought it was dirt and tried to scrub them off! My husband told me I was crazy an they'd always been there- anyway I've now noticed that she's developed a new small one and the old ones have gotten a bit bigger. I'm assuming that dogs, like humans can deveop skin spots as they age that are nothing more than discolorations. She doesn't pick at them and or other dog doesn't even notice them. Has anyone else ever heard of this? They're due for their check ups soon anyway, so we'll be asking the vet when we go. Answer: when you say freckles do you mean on the fur or on the skin itself? I have a beige colored dog and she has small tan spots on her fur and I think they have increased and darkened over time. If they are actually growths coming out of the fur they may be warts or some other type of growth? Your vet would beable to determine what they are. My husband had an older dog with many growths which the vet actually removed when he was going in for a surgical procedure anyways. The vet didn't think they were harmful but suggested removal because they would bleed easily and didn't look very nice. Answer: They're on the skin. The hair on top of her head is kind of long, so you can see them when her hair is partned. And they don't stick out or anything- it seems they're completely flat. Looks to me just like human freckles, only a bit darker. maybe they're age spots or something??? I've got the appointment for her check up in about 2 weeks, so I'll post what the vet says then.
