Is this eye-discharge something to worry about?

Question:
Hi,

I have two mixed breed dogs. My boy-dog, Toshi, has been having discharge from one of his eyes the past couple of days. He always has a bit of runny, brownish discharge but this is more like eye-goo and it's white-yellowish. It's not much, but I have wiped it off about three-four times today.
We've been going to a large dog park in our area a lot lately and Toshi's been jumping in the water, rolling in mud and playing with a lot of other dogs so I'm thinking that it could have something to do with that.

Does anyone have any idea of what it could be? Is this something I should worry about? I don't know if I'm over-reacting or if this is something I should take him to the vet for.

Thanks for the help,

Rocktosh

Answer:
Best to get the vet to take a look at it. Could be a blocked tear duct or conjungtivitis. Either way, it will most likely need some drops to help it clear up. Eyes are tricky and when left untreated can lead to other problems.

Answer:
It is best to get it checked, one of my dogs has had eye guckies for a while now, actually like snots ( sorry for the graphic grossness) anyways turns out its a seasonal allergy or cold for her. But they werent yellow or green, there was just one day that they were so i brought her in.
Better to be safe right.

Answer:
hi there,
the others might be right but if its just started and the dog isn't worried about it, try something really simple like flushing his eyes with water (boiled water then allow it to cool till just tepid) or even with saline water, might just be a bit of gunk in there or bit of irritation.
Of course if persists or gets worse see a vet for some drops or ointment. good luck

Answer:
Thank you guys so much. I feel more confident about what to do now. I just rinsed Toshi's eye with saline and I'm going to see if it gets any better. I have a feeling that I'm going to have to take him to the vet, though. I definitely don't want anything to happen to his eye. I'm still hoping that I won't have to torture him with eyedrops and stuff, but if I have to do it I have to do it. I'll have to stock up on treats.

Thanks again,

Rocktosh
