Question:
I have an 8 year old rotty. She is extremely well mannered/trained and has been my best friend.

Over the last couple of days; when she goes out to urinate, she thinks she's done and she's not. She's walking and peeing and doesn't seem to know it.

Her dog food recently changed but other than that, things are the same.

Is this because she's old? Needs to be spayed? I have no clue. I plan to take her to the vet next week but would like to know sooner if possible.

Could be because she's getting older, could be an infection, could be because she's not spayed, could be some underlying disease...you won't know until she's examined by the vet.

I hope it is nothing serious, and I hope you will consider spaying her to help prevent health problems such as ovarian, uterine, and mammary cancer, and pyometra (infection of the uterus).

Agree with all the other posts, you need a urine sample for your Vet to tell you what's going on. Happened twice with our ESS. First time was urine too alkaline and was burning her so she tried not to pee but could not hold on all the time so dribbled. Apparently not unusual as a spayed female ages. Vet put her on Stilbestrol and it cleared right up. Second time was she was eating too many apple seeds and got cyanide poisoning which causes uncontrollabe urination and defecation.

Now for the fun part, getting the urine sample. I found a soup ladle with a long handle worked best. Poochie squats, you stick it under and pour into a sterile container. If you use a stainless steel ladle you can sterilise it and re-use as usual but you might not want to tell other family members you did.
