lethargic dog

Question:
My dog started developing small tumors underneath his skin a year ago and was told it was common. He is ten.
And he has developed several more since but nothing else until last week.
He is suddenly very tired all the time (he was never a very active dog).
He doesnt come when called and although he is eating.. the chip bag rustling or the fridge door openning doesnt even make him lift his head.
VERY uncommon.
His eyes just looked glazed over and he has fallen off the bed once and tripped over him self this morning......

Answer:

Answer:
You posted this 3 hours ago...have you taken him to the vet yet and if so, what was the diagnosis?

Answer:
The dog does need to be seen by a vet ASAP-however not coming when called and not responding to rustling chip bags could just be failing hearing.
Glazed eyes and falling off the bed- sounds like me before coffee.
Seriously, I think puppy does need immediate attention.

Answer:
I took my old boy in 2 hours ago and he is believed to have either west nile or encephalitis.
I am just heart broken.
Has any one gotten through this or am I condemned to letting my best friend go.

Answer:
West nile causes encephalitis

Okay here I go again with my homeopathic remedies

He'll need antiviral medication immediately

BUT go get some oil of oregano and start giving it to him ASAP

2/3 drops 3 times a day consistently..put it in a little yogurt for him to lick at...its' strong stuff. If he wont' take it you'll have to dilute it a LOT and give to him with a dropper but the dilution rate has to be a lot or it will burn his mouth/throat. Give him something afterwards to take the taste away.

Discuss with your vet, it won't harm the dog BUT it has known to kill many virus, bacteria, fungi etc...

Depends on what is causing the encephalitis, if thats what it is, the vet should see the swelling of the brain through a xray.

How is the vet treating right now and is he with u or at the vets?

Do NOT leave him in a vets overnight if they do not have staff on there 24hrs. Get him to a 24hr staffed emerg facility!

Answer:
he is at the vets and someone is with him.
The doc says that there is no CURE for this...
That you can keep him alive for quite a while but he will inevitably die.
I dont know what to think.
Everything Ive read on the internet agrees with the doc.
He was really quite bad at the time I left him.
Hardly concious.....

Answer:
Oh, I'm so sorry to hear about your dog.:(

Answer:
Where do you live? Mosquitos' in most areas aren't out yet so low chance of being west nile IMHO.

Where are you? I would call your local health dept and find out when the mosquito season starts in your area. Your vet should know this though.

What types of test/s are being done if any?

What are your thoughts on the oregano oil and what leads the vet to think it's encephalitis?

Encephalitis can be caused by several types of viruses not just west nile. There are also individuals who have become ill with enceph because of vaccinations.

(FYI I'm recovering from Enceph myself so I've done a lot of research on the disease)

Has your dog ever had distemper? What breed of dog is your sweetie?

Answer:
I am in southeast texas.
And believe me there are mosquitos!
All that was done so far was a blood test that showed a virus.
Other than having EVERY single symptom of encephalitis,
The vet (who I have a certain amount of respect for..He saved my sisters dogs life 3 monthes ago) Has had a dog in before that had tested positive for west nile and he feels pretty confident that is what we are dealing with.
To be honest, the amount of tests required to find out specifically which form of encephalitis he may have would financially wipe me out .
It seems perhaps I would be better off using my funds on a good amount of antibiotics and the like to see if it pulls him through.
I am VERY much into the natural way of healing my self and my dogs.
I will give absolutely every consideation in treating my boy.
What are your thoughts on the testing process?
Can dogs pull through this?
And even if we knew exactly which type Joey had...
Wouldnt the treatments generally be the same?
I LOVE ANIMALS.
I have more respect for dogs than most humans and I take great care and concern for them but I am NOT wealthy.
And believe me I am shamed I cant afford that magic pill for my baby.
Any advice is gold.

So you already have mosquitos out, sorry to hear that!

West nile is pretty much treat the symptoms at this point. Though your vet can administer some anti viral medications, and should .....specifically if the diagnosis isn't confirmed.

Since I've had positive experiences with oil of oregao I'd suggest you get it from a health food store and start giving it to your dog. There can only be benefits, it will do no harm.

Unfortunately a lot of this may just be wait and see. But spend a lot of time with him and comfort him, make him comfortable. Take him things from home with your scent on it like a tshirt and his favourite blanket.

Can you post a picture of him?

Answer:
((((trigger and friend))))))

I heard what west nile can do and I'm so sorry your dog has it.

Will there be any long term effects?

Answer:
Have you any information on the usage and effects of noni juice for west nile?

Answer:
Have you any information on the usage and effects of noni juice for west nile?

Answer:
No I'm afraid I don't

Noni can be beneficial boosting human immune systems but I do not know of any qualities it has regarding killing viral infections.

Try the oil of oregano

Answer:
What am I looking for exactly in the oregano oil...
Mg...? Price (more$$ the better?)

Answer:
A local health food store and ask for organic oil of oregano

It is VERY concentrated the bottles are small so don't be afraid of the price it is a lil expensive. However it will be cheaper for you then up here for me.

Answer:
Joey is home.
The doctor is optimistic.
He seems very tired but his eyes are bright and if I make him
he is capable of walking around.
The biggest problem right now is that he wont eat.
If he wont eat I cant give him his antbiotics ans steriods.
Salmon cakes chicken and even his favorite..bread arent exciting him....I will probably give him a few hours and try to use the syringe to get something belly coating in him.

Answer:
Come On JOEY!!!!!!!! Our furry bums are all pulling for ya!

Answer:
Buy some baby food, he'll probably eat that, and add a little mashed potato to it.

If he likes that boil some chicken breast, chop it up finely and add a tablespoon or two to it as well.

All food should be at room temperature, it's easier to digest and easier on the tummy.

Joey, you're in good hands and good hearts, we're all givin u a big fat group furry hug!!

Antibiotics?? Hmmn not antiviral?? Whats the name of the medication?

Answer:
he is on 60mg twice a day orbax and .25 dexamethasone.3 times a day
I am assuming that since the encephalitis it self can not be treated the doc
may be just trying to prevent infection.
I am feeding him baby food and plain yogurt.
He has had half a small container of each but I have to use the syringe to make him eat.
I took him out about 20 minutes ago and he peed and walked around abit but became confused and swayed a bit on the way back in. He is asleep now and dreaming.
The doc also said that oil of oregano is a fine idea but to not use it while he is on the steriods.
Your help has meant so much and I look forward to your further insight.

Answer:
Why did he not want you to use it while the dog is on steroids, I don't understand that...?

Did they do a xray of his head?

Answer:
Because the oil of oregano acts as an anti inflammatory as do the steriods and its just to much on a dog.
He was already treating him on the steriods or I would have just used the oil.
It will I am sure be helpful in the future.
He is doing very well and is eating on his own.
Still hasnt had a bowel movemont but IS peeing freely.
(and by that I mean ANYWHERE!)

Answer:
Steroids can have harmful effects but the oil of oregano doesn't.

How many days is he on the steroids for?

Frequent urination could present signs of bladder / kidney infection presence as well.

Pure cranberry juice diluted is great for this, but it has to be pure cran juice not welches or ocean spray get it at health food stores.

Answer:
Not going to touch this one, being as how I live in the West Nile/Encephalitis capitol...
But steroids would be the choice of Tx and they can and will cause excessive urination.
