My kitty ate a feather

Question:
We have some crappy feather pillows and when changing their covers, Bella was playing in and around the falling feathers. My wife saw her eat one, a larger one, about 3 inches, and probably has a bit of a stem to it too.
Will it come out alright? She didnt hack it up, its been more than a day now.. she is 12 weeks and I hope she doesn't start looking for yarn or string or more feathers to chase and eat!

Answer:
Hi hammermeister,
At just 12 weeks old, a 3-inch feather is a pretty big object in your tiny kitty's insides and digestive tract. Is your wife sure that she swallowed it?

The soft feather itself might be eliminated ok, but the stem part could be trouble, especially with such a young cat.
I would not risk a "wait and see" myself, but would seek a vet's advice.
There are after hours emergency vets that can be contacted, and they would the ones who could assess any danger.
Whenever a pet has ingested something they shouldnt have.. its always better to be safe than sorry- get an expert opinion.

Good luck, hope your kitty will be ok.

Answer:
i would call the vets and ask them if this is a concern. I have had a few cats over the years, many of them feral...I would watch them come home with their prey (usually a bird) and eat the whole bird, feathers, head, feet....ALL. They never got sick..now having said that , I don't know what kind of feathers were in your pillows.
When in doubt, just play it safe and call the vet
