dog in heat

Question:
Hi,
My dog hasn't been spayed and I think is in the 3'd cycle of heat. She is very agitated and her heart seems to be beating very fast. She has been "mothering" all the stuffed animals in the house and won't sleep in her usual spots. Is it too late to get her spayed? Do I have to wait until this cycle is over? Thanks for your help in advance.

Answer:
Yes, definitely get her spayed. Each heat she has increases her chances of getting pyometra, a life-threatening infection of the uterus that requires emergency surgery.

Answer:
Time was when a vet would charge more (10-15$) for spaying an animal in heat, however I think that has generally gone by the wayside with more recent advances in technique and better education of vets in school.

Spaying an animal is some what akin to buying your wife flowers on her birthday. Done on time it is a gesture well received. Done later the effect is lessened by each passing day. (and for any guys on the board don't try to give her flowers a week later and offer the lame excuse the florist was waiting for a shipment of flowers) LOL

Get the animal spayed ASAP.
