Cat out of surgery - fluid in lungs

Question:
My 16 year old, diabetic cat had bladder/crystal surgery done Monday morning. There was a complication where the cathedar was lodged & Perineal Urethrostomy had to be performed as well.

I was told this morning that he now has fluid in his lungs, possibly due to the medication used during surgery and the vet is going to see if antibiotics can clear this up. Kitty is still hospitalized.

Is fluid in the lungs after surgery common? My vet is in surgery all day and my mind is my worst enemy. Please offer any comforting advice you can.

Thank you.

Answer:
I don't know about animals but yes after surgery it is very possible to get fluid in the lungs ( pneumonia) from the anthestetic. Which is why patients are encouraged to breathe deeply after surgery and to get up and moving. The more laying down the higher chances of pneumonia.
Your cat is at the best place she could be right now!! Best of Luck and hopefully her recovery is quick so you can relax. Let us know when your cat can come home.

Thank you, I feel a bit more relieved. Do you think cat nip would have any side affects 2 days after surgery? I know it will get him off his feet.

Answer:
Hmm, not a cat owner, but when I've seen cats get into catnip they go bazoobaz and run around like crazy jumping on stuff. Always wondered why it did that to them. I guess it might be different with every cat and I'm sure you know your cat pretty well. Wonder if that much movement might not be good for the cat right now. Again, I don't know anything about the surgery in terms of what it entails, or much about cats in general other than that they seem to like me for some reason.

Answer:
I have a little cat-nip garden for my cats and they react differently,it's more like they were in la-la land. They chew and roll on the cat-nip,really love it.But it's the fesh kind, growing on a patch in my backyard.
So,I can see no harm in letting your kitty have some.I hope he will be allright after going through surgery and will come home soon.16 is a nice old age for a cat,but he still has a few more years to enjoy

Answer:
Your most welcome Scootercat!! I just hope that info did help you to feel better.
My dog Abbey had her spaying done 3 weeks ago. She was running around the next day after her surgery. She didn't hurt anything, no infection, nothing. Your cat will do as much as it can tolerate. But I don't know how hyper a cat could be, your vet will let you know the best care for her when you get her home.
Did your cat have 2 surgeries back to back or did they fix everything in 1?
