okay I'm panicked Holly went into heat today and is acting strange (well hormonal!) and poor Taz who only got neutered last Friday is acting weird too! I need to know will he start mounting her - if so how can I stop this from happening??? Can he impregnate her - is there even the slightest chance that he could??? Can he em (how can I put it) TRY to impregnate her???? I'm seriously worried its Saturday here and the vets are all closed and I don't know who to ask!!!!

I have them in separate rooms for now but what happens tonight? How long is her heat going to last (this is her first season)

Well first off.. don't panic. If your other dog is castrated he does not have the equipment anymore to impregnate her - But he may be able to go through the mothions as the hormones that allow him to perform have not had enough time to get out of his system. SO you can allow them together - just don't allow him to get to "randy" But even if it does happen - there will be NO puppies anyway.

Don't let your female anywhere near another dog that is not fixed, or out of your site until she is fixed. And get her in to be fix as soon as you can (this week if possible). It may cost a little extra (likely $10-30 more) to fix her while in heat, but it can be done safely.

It only takes one viable sperm cell to cause pregnancy and your male may still have a few floating around, so do NOT let him mount your female. Dogs will do amazing things to get at a female in heat, so be very vigilant in keeping them apart.

He will mount and tie with her if you are not careful. Keep her away from him. Heat lasts about three weeks, and it could take 2 weeks for your male to be completely sterile. It's better to err on the side of caution.

And yes, even dogs who have been neutered for a long time can still tie with a female, although of course they are shooting blanks.

Really he could have sperm left??? But the testies are completely gone... how can he possibly have sperm?

Simply put, it's sorta like humans and why the "pulling out" theory can not be used as safe birth control. There may be some semen lift in the ducts outside the testicules. Semen can live for a long time in the right conditions.

Thank you everyone - the day has been long and hard - I brought Holly out with me to the pet store and got her 'pants' and a special spray which is supposed to mask the smell of her hormones to male dogs... she is more than embarrassed about the situation but having the pants on her has helped her a little...

I got in a crate for the next few weeks for her to sleep in and be in when I can't be watching her all the time - thank god the weather is good I've had Ceide and Taz out the back for most of the day but I'm worried about ostrising Holly too much from them.

I'm worried about him penetrating her at all so shooting blanks or not will he try to penetrate her now or after she has been spayed???

After your bitch is spayed, she probably won't tolerate being mounted, but even if she is, there won't be any puppies, so I'm not understanding the worry?

she is wearing those special underwear that cover her up so the crate was fine for last night I stayed down with them and slept on the couch just in case though. I don't like the idea of him penetrating her full stop. My mother would have a heart attack that is the reason why she didn't have a male dog before this I know its only natural but she is a bit old fashioned and the sight of two dogs at it would kill her!

Plus Holly is only tiny and he is alot bigger so I don't want him to do anything with her! She is walking around and any time he goes near her.. her bum hits the ground and she growls at him... so she doesn't want it either! at times, Honey doesnt mind... Chocolate's gotten QUITE close (he was neutered almost 3yrs ago!)

Holly is a maltese the vet said she won't spay her until 6weeks after this heat!!! So I booked her in for the 19th of July with my other dog Ceide who is really disgusted by the way Holly is going on LOL - if looks could kill! LOL

She won't sleep in the same room as her and has dragged her bed into the hall!!!! LOL - I was in hysterics when I seen it! and she has been giving Taz a hard time about sniffing around Holly - she beat him up twice!

Taz got his stitches out on Thursday the vet assured me that he can't do anything and that he has no sperm left but I think I'll take the word of this board to be on the safe side and keep them away from each other!

These are the longest three weeks of my life!!!!
