Question:
Hello,
Is there a possible cure for Hip Displasia in growing pups? My 4 month DDB has a limp on his left side and the vet just told me to add some glucosamine to his diet and take him for swims. She claims he may out grow it. Is there a homepathic remedy for this situation?
thanks

Answer:
Did your vet say it's HD or is that what you assume it to be?
It could be from growing.

Glucosamine and shark cartilidge, approrpriate to your dogs size and weight and development. Calcium supplementation as well, sardines are a good source.

Answer:
Actually I,m just assuming it to be.
Thanks for the info anyway. I guess I got a bit nervous.

Answer:
Hello

Okay, first off: unless it gets really bad, I would put off taking x-rays. Until a dog is full-grown, the x-rays may make hip dysplasia look worse than it is or make it appear when it really isn't there, and the problem is that the pup's bones are just growing at different rates. I would suggest putting your pup on food that contains glucosamine and chondritin, it's only a small amount but it can help with prevention if it's something you're worried about. Exercise is good as well as the muscles grow and do the work of the bones that are in the wrong place by holding the bones where they should be. One of our dogs was told she had the highest stage of hip dysplaysia when she was 6 months old and they wanted to do invasive surgery, cut her hip bones in three places (per side) and restructure them. We put her on food with added glucosamine and chondritin, she goes for walks, and there is nothing wrong with her now. The breed club (she's a bernese) gave us many suggestions of ways to deal with it holistically, etc. Maybe try contacting your breed club as well. Try everything you can before you do anything about it. Some vets will try to pressure you into it. The specialist we were sent to see for ours said if we didn't do it, within 6 months she wouldn't be able to walk. We took our chances and now, 2 and a half years later, x-rays show she has no hip dysplaysia! Anyway, I'm blabbering on here, but I hope this helps somewhat.

Answer:
Actually, the amount of glucosamine that is found in foods isn't worth anything as far as doing any good for much of anything. It does look good on an ingredients list and gets more money at the check out counter.

You can get glucosamine at Wal-Mart in the vitamin isle.

I am having a blonde moment, so I am not sure what a DDB is right now. I'm sure it'll come to me after I post this though. LOL!

At 4 months, it is probably pano and your pup should out grow it. Follow your vets advice and feed good foods.
