Starr - sheltie - coughing
Question: I have a 10 year old sheltie. She started coughing about 3 months ago. I took her to her vet and she was given prednisone and an antibiotic. She did well while on the 3 days of prednizone but went back to square one when the prednisone was finished. After another visit to the vet and a series of tests and bloodwork, she was put back on prednisone . Her X-rays showed a shadow in part of one lung, one side of her heart was enlarged( the side that has to do with her lungs) and hypothiroidism. Her white blood count was extreemly high as well. Now new symptoms appear. She stopped eating 6 days ago, drinks very little, vomits thick bright yellow bile and sleeps all the time. She only gets up to vomit. Her gums last night were bright red, but today are pale pink, the whites of her eyes are red. She has had 2 bowel movements in the last six days ,both extreemly runny. What could be wrong with my dog?? We have another vet appointment this afternoon but I don't seem to be getting any answers from her. Answer: Starr, I'm not a vet, however, all this does not sound good. You need a 2nd opinion ASAP! Prednisone is not a drug to take lightly. There are many side effects. Please try another vet today. Heather Answer: Oh, poor dog!:( This does sound very serious and a second opinion may be a good idea as this dog is clearly suffering a lot, and action must be taken one way or another. Please let us know what the outcome is! Answer: I am sorry to hear about your dog. I would cancel the one vet appointment and go in and see another one today. My grandma's dog was on that medicine and it caused her so many health problems she was worse off than when she took her to the vet. I would get another opinion! Good luck and let us know what happens and what the vet says! :( Answer: I brought her to a new vet. They kept her. She is extreemly dehidrated and is on intervenous. They are doing tests on her. I'll know more tomorrow. Thanks for the concern! Answer: Well, good and bad here. Great that you found a new vet that would listen to your concerns. Bad for your pup. Good thoughts only coming your way and please keep us updated. The best of luck with everything... Heather Answer: I'm so sorry to hear this! Please let us know as soon as you find out more. Answer: Your Sheltie (and you ) are in my prayers..(conga) What is her name? Answer: News of my sheltie "Starr" is not good. She is in total kidney failure. The vet isn't sure she'll make it through the night. I am so upset. She is like another child to me. If they can get her hydrated enough it could reverse the kidney failure. I had a series of test done on her 2 weeks ago and her kidneys were fine so we know that it hasn't been a long term problem. Right now her counts are right off the charts, they don't even know exactly how high they are. I have to wait till morning to find out more unless she gets worse during the night. They said they would call me if she got worse or started having convulsions. Answer: So sorry to hear this.:( Answer: Just talked to the vet and Starr made it through the night. She is now producing urine. They are going to keep her on I.V. for another 24 hours and then redo her tests. I'm on my way to see her now Answer: That sounds like good news - good luck and give her a big cuddle Answer: Good news,I hope soo very much she'll be ok..poor little dog :( Answer: WTG Starrrrrrry girl!! You have lots of stars shining down on you! Yu'll be okay Answer: After 3 days at the vets on intervenus, Starr's body started to shut down. I brought her home last night so my children could have a chance to say their private good-byes. I will take her this morning to have her put down. There is no explanation as to why her kidneys failed so rapidly. I will miss her terribly, she has been my sidekick for 10 years. Answer: I'm so sorry you're losing your old friend.:( She was a lucky girl to be so loved all these years. Answer: I too am sorry for you and your family, most of us here know how difficult it is to lose our four-legged friends.Take comfort in knowing she had a wonderful life with you.My thoughts are with you and Starr :( Answer: Oh dear I am so very very sorry! Trust yourself this was not your fault, you had no way to know. This same thing happened to my friends Golden about three years ago and he was only 6 years old. (hugs) to you and your family and special hugs to (Starr) Our furries who have crossed over already will be there to great you Starr! Answer: This is the hardest part about having a dog, or cat. I know how much you are hurting today and feel so bad for you. I've often heard the "Rainbow Bridge" poem, but I read something the other day that I think is nice. "There is an Indian legend .... when a human dies there is a bridge he must cross to enter into heaven. At the head of that bridge waits every animal he encountered during his lifetime. The animals...decide which humans may cross the bridge...and which are turned away." Unknown I want to believe that someday we'll all be reunited with the pets we have loved so much. You didn't let her down when she needed you to help her. Answer: I am so so sorry to read about your loss. I am having issues right now with my puppy so I know what you went through. Know that you did what needed to be done for Starr and she loves you for taking care of her. Again I am sorry for your loss and youre in my prayers. Answer: Copyright © 2007 - 2008 www.tendlife.com
