Crying & Panting
Question: My cat this evening is roaming from one end of the house to the other end of the house meowing. I caught him panting too. (It is 68 in my home) He has been jumping into his littler box quite often tonight too. Maybe some of you have a cat like mine that has to rip and run before going to the bathroom? He has always done this and is continuing to do so once in a while tonight. But I do not think he is getting anyting out when he jumps into his box. I don't know if he has ate or drank anything today because when we arrived home this evening, my daughter filled his dishes to the brim. He seems somewhat normal, because when he finally does lay down, I tried to play with him and he swatted and played back. His eyes seem normal. He is not sneezing. He still purrs. He is a three year old rag doll neutered male. I do not think he has diarrhea as I don't notice a smell or see any stains on his long white hair. He is just running to his litter box constantly and complaining the whole way. Any suggestions on what I can give him? I will take him into the vet tomorrow asap, but I would also like some "been there done that" testimony. Thank you, Nichole Answer: Is he peeing at all? If he is crying, going in the box but NOT peeing, this could be an emergency. Neutered male cats are famous for getting urinary blockages and stones, and if he has this he must be treated ASAP or have uremic poisoning, which is often fatal. I hope this is not the case, and that this may be a simple urinary tract infection but better safe than sorry. Has he done anything in his box? If not he could be constipated or have a hairball. Answer: I took him into the vet today. He has stones. He did potty a little bit in his litter box everytime he would get in, but just a LITTLE. He doesn't cry when in his box, but walks around a lot still crying and meowing. The vet gave him some antibiotics and prescription food from Science Diet. He should be better by Monday. IF he isn't, he has to go stay at the vet's place for a day so the vet can get a urine sample and test it. Thank you for the information and your reply. It is greatly appreciated, and if it would help anyone, I will be posting an update. Nichole Answer: Good that you took him! Yes, we would like an update. Answer: My cat has been on his prescription cat food for five days now, plus taking his two pills a day. He is definately better, so apparently the vet was correct for once with his diagnosis of stones. Thank you to the person(s) who emailed me with advice.
