Question:
My little Dog wakes up gagging. This has happened 3 times and it is when we are traveling. the next day he is tiried and it stoppes. I am going to make an appt. tomorrow but i was wondering if you knew what some of the reasons he would do this? It has never happened at home. He is a year old and he is a Chihuahua

Dogs sometimes do this reverse cough that sounds like an asthma attack.

Is the dog spitting up anything, phlegm?

Answer:
No he does not spit or through up anything. It is like he wakes up with acid reflex His mouth opens up and it looks like he is going to through up but he doesn't. There really is no cough involved.This will go on all night into the next morning and then it stops. And like I said it only happens when we are not home and we have gone away for a few days. It usally happens on the first night. This time it happened on the last night or third night. He is find today. I have to go to Stockton today and so I will call the vet when I get home and see if I can get him in today. when they aren't doing anything and they can't see it, it makes it hard to really understand what is going on.
