Eating Less

Question:
My 3 month old puppy is acting different. He is not finishing all of his food, but he remains very active. We are keeping him more active than usual. He used to finish his food quickly but now he doesnt finish it. We have been giving him new treats, and a little more than usual since we are training him. He did throw up ince, a small amount but he ate it back up. Whats could be wrong?

Answer:
If you are present when your puppy vomits, do not let him eat it, since this is something his body has already rejected once.

Can you give a little more detail, about how you are keeping him active?

Answer:
i was not present when vomited. just recently, we have been taking the puppy on long walks and jogging short distances with him, also teaching him how to fetch. he stopped finishing his food completely once we started giving him more exercise. coincidence or could it be something else?

Answer:
I would cut out the long walks and the jogging. That's too much for a 12 week old puppy of any size, but particularly if he is a large breed. Short walks and playtime is best.

You might want to talk about that with your vet about the eating.. If you are giving him lots of treats, that could reduce his appetite for his meals. For rewards, try giving him just a teeny piece of whatever it is.

Answer:
I totally agree with what LR has said.

Especially the long walks and jogging. This is to much for a 12 week old puppy.

What breed is your pup?

Answer:
Also at 12 weeks a puppy has no protection from it's vaccination program you have been keeping current, ( I hope.. I hope)
Long walks may expose your puppy to the evil virus'es other people do not care about. Lessen the exposure and lengthen personal, one on one bonding time.

Answer:
Has the puppy been wormed? That could affect his appetite and also cause him to vomit.

Answer:
The puppy is half black lab and we think the other half is german shepard.

As for the vomit, it only happened once and i think it could be since he ate some grass.

He is eating normally again, and finishing his food. We did cut back on the exercise, yet we keep him active with fetch and other things.

He is recievin his vaccinations, but he was not checked for worms

Answer:
Roundworms and tapeworms are really common in puppies. They can be infected just by going where other infected dogs have gone. I had a puppy that was infected 3 times Most vets will give you a little plastic container to bring in a stool sample when you first take your puppy in to be checked over and to start his vaccinations. Part of the "puppy package". Look for what looks like dry cooked rice near the tail.
