puppy eating poop
Question: My 4 month old puppy starting eating his own poop recently. I don't know what I can do to stop him. I clean the yard up as soon as I know he went, but sometime he still does it and I don't realize this. I mentioned it to my vet when I went the other day and he said it's somthing dogs do. He said it's not abnormal. My puppy also vomits after this. He has esophagus problems so I have to feed him canned food and I recently started experimenting with dry food soaked in water until it is no longer hard. Mako doesn't regurgitate the canned food, but he started eating his poop at the same time as I started the dry food experiments, so I thought it was the food that was making him sick, but this morning I woke up and there were feces in the floor and I knew he definetely ate them. Does any body elses dog do this? Could he be lacking something in his diet? As I see it, feeding him canned food for the rest of his life would cost me 5$ a day, (150$ a month), which is too much, he seems okay with the soaked dry food, but if it's causing him other problems, then what do I do? I know this is really gross, but I'm hoping that someone else has had to deal with this problem and can help me. Thank you! Answer: Your vet is right, this is a very common thing for puppies, and even some adult dogs. You have to take him out on leash everytime. If he shows interest in eating poop, you can teach him to "Leave it". Then pick it up immediately. He should outgrow this. If you aren't sure how to teach "Leave it", let us know. Answer: My pup did that when i first got him home ,the vet gave me this powder you put in food, doesnt make their food taste different but when it comes out the other end it tastes bad, worked on him,he stopped eating it... Answer: I'm taking puppy training classes with Mako and we are learning the leave it. I usually just say "Hey" and he stops cold in his tracks. I thought about stuff that would make his feces taste bad for him, but his stomach is not very strong, so I don't think that would be a good idea at this point. He's been through alot lately and I think that i will have to watch him more instead of putting stuff in his food. It's a great idea though, I just think it's not the right one for us. So Lucky, can I assume by your response that this is not occuring because I am not feeding him enough or that his food is not right? These were my concerns. Answer: When Yukon and Tron were pups, the would get into the litter box and eat the poop....Little buggers......LOL He is a link you can read...It also stated what LR suggested about the "leave it" http://www.parklandkennels.com/conte...?qid=2&catid=1 Answer: hi! I raed about your puppy and I was at pet smart today and noticed they have something for that. I'm not sure what its called because i just read what it was. So maybe go to a pet store. good luck Answer: Yeah I got some stuff called Deter from Petsmart. It works, but I still have to watch him. I would say it's half as bad now. He still eats it, just not very often. Answer: hey my grandma's dog doesnt eat it, everytime grandma gives her a bath and takes her for a walk she goes and play with it and gets all dirty again, and grandma gets very mad about it, is there any way to prevent this? Answer: Our vet suggested that we give our dog clorets tabs, and that the smell of the clorets in her poop would keep the dog out of it. We only have the problem in the winter when she throws the frozen ones around the yard. She doesn't actually eat them. Answer: Hi, I have a 9 month old GSP who likes to eat our other dogs poo. Someone told us to leave one in the yard and sprinkle it with hot chilli powder or tabasco. It stopped him for a while, but then you have to do it again every couple of weeks.
