depression or sick kitty?
Question: hi everyone! this is my first time on a pet forum and had a few questions. let me just tell you a few things about my little family. i am a travel nurse with two wonderful cats. both 1 1/2 years old, brother and sister. i have had them since birth. we lost the mother cat last winter and we miss her terribly. .... so, my question. we just took the big trip across the country from new england to arizona. we arrive a week ago and the trip took about 5 days of travel. the cats did wonderfully by the way......well i think...... pumpkin, my female is doing great. willie on the other hand is my concern. our first night here, he vomitted a few times. no blood, some undigested food but i kinda threw it to maybe car sickness...but he is still vomitting up some bile looking fluid and some hairballs now and then. he is eating a bit , no changes in litterbox activity, bms are fine and so is his urine. my concern lays with the occasional vomitting and the fact that he looks sad. also his fur is kinda straggly looking, like he might be a stray or something, shedding a bit mroe than normal and some dandruff....minor stuff here and there but the whole picture just makes me question he is having a hard time adjusting to our new place or is he ill?? they are both indoor cats and he still is playful time and again. thanks for your time.... Answer: We moved from Canada to France 3 months ago. We brought our 14 year old cat with us. Before leaving Canada, we sold the house which meant a big upheaval for several months, then we packed up the furniture to be sent over. he seemed ok but a bit frazzled! Then to add to his misery, he was put in the hold of the plane for the flight over. Anyway, although he did seem ok once we arrived and he saw all of his stuff again, I think that it's only recently that he seems to have really settled down. I imagine that your cat has been through a similar stressful situation and he may just be more sensitive than the female cat.As long as there is nothing obviously wrong with him he may just need more time to get adjusted. Give him lots of hugs for as long as it takes! Good luck. Answer: I think you should take Willy to the vet for a check-up. Better to be safe than sorry IMO. Answer: Cats can get ill in response to stressful situations, but they're also are very sensitive to changes in their environment. A check-up is a good idea to rule out any illness, but it sounds like stress and anxiety about all the changes and the new space to me. You might try Bach's Rescue Remedy if you feel kitty is anxious; this really helped my older cat when we moved. He also stopped grooming, got kitty acne (bumbs under the chin), and wouldn't come out from under the bed (until I gave him Bach's). I've also read that it's a good idea to treat a move like bringing home a new cat--i.e., keeping him in a "safe" room, with his food and box until he feels comfortable enough to venture out. Good luck and please post updates. -kb Answer: Copyright © 2007 - 2008 www.tendlife.com
