cat: infection, fluid in lungs, amputation, lost weight
Question: Our cat of 12-years (short-haired Siamese/Persian mix) had lost about 30% of her body weight and has not been eating for the last 3-weeks. We took her to the vet, and they found fluid in her lungs, and an infection in one of her front toes. After 2-3 weeks of antibiotics (2-different types), she still isn't eating normally, and her toe is still swollen (at least it doesn't stink of infection anymore). Vet said the toe bone is degenerated, and should be amputed. At the same, he drew out approx. 75cc of fluid from her lungs. The vet still has no idea why she has fluid in her lungs, esp. since her blood tests are normal. She has begun eating (last 2-days), doesn't limp, but we're worried about fluid in her lungs recurring (an x-ray and ultrasound shows something in her lungs but the vet has no idea), and whether or not we should amputate. Should we get another opinion ? What else should we do ? Amputate ? Exploratory surgery ? We are in Jacksonville, Florida, so any recommendation of vets would be appreciated. Please help. Thanks, neil Answer: I think a second opinion would be a good idea. This (weight loss & fluid) sounds quite serious and you need to know what is causing it.
