Puppy has a bump

Question:
After petting my 6 month old puppy yesterday, i felt a bump on his back. its about the size of a quarter and it feels like when your neck gland is swollen up when you are sick... like if you have a mono or something.

10 minutes later I was at the vet...
he had his vaccination last friday and the bump is around where he got his shots. so the vet tells me to wait about a week, it could just be from the shots.

If it does not go down, he sais it might be a TUMOR!!!! why did he have to say that, now i'm gonna be worried for a week.

anyone ever have a problem like this?

Answer:
This sounds like a vaccination reaction, common when the vax is given SQ, tell the vet and have a notation made on the record for the next vax to be given IM. Some animals are sensitive to the leptosporosis or rabies vax. You can opt to leave out the lepto portion of the vax next time if that is the culprit, in it's place they use a sterile diluent. If it was the rabies that caused it just have the injection administered into the muscle.

Answer:
My vet has stopped giving vaccinations in the back of the neck, although it's easy and less painful, she believes there is a chance of tumors happening ,there must be something to it or,she would not have told me.

Answer:
wow chico, i have nver heard this, i will certainly bring it up with vet, he gives her shots in her neck, oh now that is worry. surely they can do it else wehre yes?? i hope so

Answer:
My vet gives shots in the shoulder blade area. He always tells me to massage it right afterward to prevent a lump.

Answer:
Sq., subcutaneous injections of a vaccine can produce a lump from a reaction to the vaccine itself. Sq injections are given in the nape of the neck or shoulder area due to the excess of skin tissue. It also makes administration of the injection easier for the pet and owner. Im., or intramuscular injections show little or absent reactions to the same vaccine and no discomfort to the animal but is less acceptible to the owner.
Twenty years ago all vax's were given im.

Answer:
My vet metioned something about it being safer in the thigh and that is where my cats had there vax lately.Actually the back of the neck was a relatively new way, with all my other cats it was always done in the thigh.
I never had any trouble with neck-vax,but better safe than sorry,I suppose she knows what she's talking about
