Boxers and Acepromazine
Question: O.k. I read in a few places that Boxers should never be administered "Acepromazine", an anestetic (did I spell this wrong?). This is stressing me a bit. Mako has to be neutered in a few months and I'm wondering wether I should "remind" my vet before I let him neuter my pup. Is this anastetic comonly used? I just don't want stupid if I tell him about it - but I don't want my puppy to be hurt or to die! I realize that I might be overeacting... But it still bugs me. Thanks! Answer: Yes, talk to your vet about this tell and tell him your worries. You may be worrying for nothing if the vet is already knowledgeable about this. Answer: Ace Promazine is nothing to fear. Very commonly used around all small vet practices as a pre-op or to quiet a dog with a history of biting. Ace in the tablet form is often Rx'ed for cat's which do not like to travel. If serious weather is predicted I have given Ciara .02 cc i.m. of Ace to calm her, but only if I cannot move her to a safer location. On a rare occasion Ace Promazine can excite an animal and cause anxiety. Answer: No, but it can't be administered to Boxers because it might be lethal to them. That's why i'm worrying, I know it can be given to other pets, but I'm not sure if my vet knows you can't give it to Boxers. Answer: Mako is right. It can't be given to Boxers. http://www.americanboxerclub.org/health/healthfr.htm Fourth link on the left. Answer: In 25 years, "I" have never seen a problem giving Ace to a Boxer. I have many "Boxer" friends so to speak....next to Jack Russell Terriers for my region, Boxers are most popular...never a problem. My cancer coach & best friend raises Boxers, I have whelped many of her bitches and a few C-sections included. *In no way am I condoning the breeding aspect of this thread* All have done well on Ace Promazine. In a few cases Ace "can" cause anxiety... Please research this further...Ace as a pre-op, enables the Vet to intubate easier than without. And there are other benefits also. Answer: But why the hell would someone risk that? Answer: There is one drug commonly used in anesthetic protocols that should not be used in the Boxer. The drug is Acepromazine, a tranquilizer, which is often used as a preanesthetic agent. In the Boxer, it tends to cause a problem called first degree heart block, a potentially serious arrhythmia of the heart. It also causes a profound hypotension (severe lowering of the blood pressure) in many Boxers that receive the drug. Recently, on the Veterinary Information Network, a computer network for practicing veterinarians, an announcement was placed in the cardiology section entitled "Acepromazine and Boxers." This described several adverse reactions to the drug in a very short time span at a veterinary teaching hospital. All the adverse reactions were in Boxers. The reactions included collapse, respiratory arrest, and profound bradycardia (slow heart rate, less than 60 beats per minute). The announcement suggested that Acepromazine should not be used in dogs of the Boxer breed because of a breed related sensitivity to the drug. This if from the link that Mona posted. I've read it from many other sources as well. I really don't understand why someone would take that risk. Answer: In 25 years I have never seen a Boxer respond to Ace Promazine with ill effects. Granted, maybe a few, 4 to 6 canines had excitable moments but none were Boxer or even mixes of... Ace Promazine has been so widely used safely for a very long time..I recommend you seek out your own website's, maybe talking to a professional in the field would help also. After you have done some research you are more than welcome to slap me . Answer: Yes, I have done my research, and that is why i'm asking whether I should tell my vet or not. I'm not asking wether it is safe. I don't think it is and I DON'T WANT my Boxer to have it - even if the pope says it's safe. But again - I wasnt't asking wether or not it is safe, I want to know if it would be impolite to tell my vet not to use it - or if I should just expect that he knows this info. If I tell you that I've seen people give a chocolate bar to their dog every day and the dog has never had any adverse reaction, would you give one to your dog? Just because someone does it, it doesn't mean that it's safe. I would rather not take that chance, even if it's a 1% chance. I'm surprised any animal lover would suggest giving something to a dog that was proven to be dangerous by competent authorities. Are you a vet Karin? And I wouldn't want to slap you! I'm not a slapper! Answer: Mako, The easiest way to handle this without being impolite with your vet is to ask him/her what the meds are that they're planning on giving your pooch. If the one in question is stated, then you can bring your concerns to the table without any fear of offending their intelligence. Or (this is what I would do) when you bring Mako in just mention that you have read that this particular med can pose risks on the boxer breed, and ask him/her what alternatives he/she can use. A good vet will not be offended by this, in actuallity, they will be more than happy to discuss this, and quell any of your concerns. Just out of curiousity, which vet do you use? I'm with Algonquin animal hospital, and altavista animal hospital. Answer: Thanks Kona, I think I will bring it up nonchalantly, asking what they will use is a great idea, or maybe just ask him what it is, is also a great idea. I will bring it up however, because it's very important to me. I go to Chapel Hill Veterinary Clinic in Orleans on St-Joseph Blvd. The vet's name is Dr. Rozon, he is so great! His assistants are also very sweet. I first went to St-Laurent Animal Hospital on Montreal Road, because it's the closest to here and it was new, but a friend of mine recomended Chapel Hill and I love it. I never go to the west end so I don't know where Algonquin is. Oh, and a friend of mine will come to Conroy Pit with me and Mako, he goes there with his dog a few times a week! Can't wait to see what it's like! Answer: Originally Posted by cutelittlemako Yes, I have done my research, and that is why i'm asking whether I should tell my vet or not. I'm not a slapper! No, I am not a vet, but I have been a tech for over 24 years now. Please spare me the chocolate stories. You are not talking to a child here so reserve the insults for others that may deserve it. Surprised that any animal lover would suggest giving something to a dog that was proven dangerous? Give me a break! Where do you get off ? How many years experience do you have and why did you ask in the first place? Don't answer that, I already know, you read it somewhere. Good work Sherlock. Answer: I wasn't asking wether or not it was good, I was asking wether I should mention it to my vet or not. If you like it you can start your own post on it, i'm sure it has many benefits. Answer: And i'm truly very sorry if the chocolate analogy insulted you, i really didn't mean it to look that way! Answer: I have nothing to contribute to the discussion at hand but I was just at Conroy Pit over the weekend and had a great time with Molly. You'll love it! She had so much fun, we went for a long hike and there were tons of great dogs there and open field for the dogs to run around in. But was she ever tired - she slept all night. Now if only I could take her every day.... Answer: oh good! I can't wait to go. I think i'll call my friend on Saturday to see if he wants to go! Answer: hey missy, your in Ottawa too? what area?, what parks do you usually go to? Answer: No, I am actually in Montreal right now but I used to live in Ottawa and love it there so I go back quite a bit. I also go to the Bruce Pit (I think that is what it is called??) and along the canal. Any other good parks you would recommend? kona - sounds like you're an avid cyclist...you're definitely in a great place for it. Answer: Cool, Bruce pit is where I usually go (closest to my house). There is another dog park in the east end by the ottawa river, not sure of the name of it though, and some people in Orleans are trying to get another started behind the water tower. When I bring Kona out at night I just go to the College grounds, no one is around and there's a huge field for her to run and play in. (shhh though, I think its against the bylaws....) For the biking, I rode quite abit more last year than this so far, but I still get out a couple of times a week. If I remember correctly my bike comp. logged alittle under 3500km last season, this year its only about 300km so far. Answer: Copyright © 2007 - 2008 www.tendlife.com
