very sick dalmatian!

Question:
Hi everyone,
I need some help with my 8 year old dalmatian female (Persia). She's been very sick for the past 4 days, and I've already taken her to the vet twice, but he seems unable to make a diagnosis. I live in Cairo, Egypt, and unfortunately the veterinary care here is not great. I would really appreciate it if anyone out there could give me some advice, based on her symptoms: she's been vomiting, drinking huge quantities of water, refusing to eat, she has diarrhea and she's shivering a lot and panting (which means she's in pain). Persia is usually the most active of the bunch; she's the smallest and has been deaf since birth, but she's a bundle of joy and we're all worried sick about her. Her mom and 2 brothers are also with me, and they're fine. I don't know what to do. The vet gave her an antibiotic (streptophenocol) and an intestinal antiseptic (called Kapect), but they don't seem to be helping her at all. I'm very worried, and don't know where to go from here. Please write to me if you have any ideas. She's only been out in our garden, and there are no pesticides, poisonous plants etc. out there.
Thanks,
Nihal

Answer:
Please remember that I am not a vet and I can't see your dog. Having said that, I read the symptoms that you listed and did a little checking and it sounds to me like your dog MAY have parvovirus. I am enclosing a couple of links for you so that you can read them and see if the symptoms sound the same to you. The first sight tells a lot about the illness, but does not describe the symptoms at all (how silly is that?!?). I am enclosing it because it is very informative otherwise.

link 1

The second link descripes the symptoms and has more information. The good news is that since she is still with you, IF this is what she has, she may well pull through. In any case, both sites tell what tests need to be run for diagnosis.

Good luck.

Thanks so much for your reply. Now that I've looked it over, it does sound like parvovirus, and I'll be discussing it with the vet. Unfortunately, hospitalizing her here in Egypt is not an option. Thanks anyway.
