Puppy sometimes yelps when on a walk..

Question:
I a teenager who just recently got her first dog...a seven week old mixed puppy. He sometimes yelps when I take him outside to use the restroom. Could the grass hurt his paws(be too sharp)? At first I though maybe his collar was too tight, but I can slip two fingers under it. Did anyone else have a problem with their dogs yelping as pups? Maybe i'm just overly concerned but he tries to run back inside after yelping...

Answer:
When does he yelp - before he goes, during, or after? When he does go, is it normal?

Answer:
It could be anything for such a small puppy. I don't think the grass would be too sharp for his paws, but if you walk on gravel or cement you might want to get him boots to walk in.

Answer:
Sorry it took me so long to reply. We got him in for his first vet visit. Now, he has stopped the yelping..unsure what made him yelp. One more question....Would anyone recommend getting a doggy bed for a pup? I have a crate at my grandmother's and he does fine in that, but my Mom's car is too small to transport that back and forth every morning. Also, I don't want to spend another $80 at petsmart for another crate. I have a large crate, but it needs a divider, but until he is larger, couldn't I just buy a dog bed? Which should I use, the large crate or a bed? Any advice is welcome, especially past experiences! Thanks!

Answer:
I'm not sure what you're asking....do you mean should you leave the puppy loose in your house with a bed? If you do this, he will mess all over the floors and you will have a very hard time housetraining him. The point of housetraining is to prevent any accidents from happening.

You really should put something in the big crate to block off some of it and use that. How long will the puppy be left alone? At this age, he really cannot "hold it" at all for very long.

If he is to be left alone for hours, then you must put newspaper at one end of the crate so he can go on that. It will take longer to housetrain him, but it's necessary.
