Hermit Crab

Question:
I have a few questions about Hermit Crabs. I'm sure hardly anyone knows about these little guys but I had to ask anyway. We bought one in AC NJ while on vacation last summer. We got the cage, sponges, food, and a bigger shell for him to move into. First off... We never ever see him eat, second, the guy we bought it from said he cannot ever eat meat or they'll die and I found a website that said Hermits do eat meat. So who do I believe? Nowhere around here sells them so nobody knows, I don't know if meat should be a part of his diet or not. Also he's been moving around real slowly lately and been out of his shell a lot, which he hardly ever used to be. That may have answered my next question but does anyone know when and how often they're supposed to change shells? We've had him a year and he's been in the same one.

Answer:
hi there sneaky. interesting pets, cute though. i had friends who had a rather large crayfish as a pet. i love soldier crabs the most, just love sitting still and waiting till hundreds surface, just amazing to watch. anyway i dont have all the answers to your Qs as i dont know much about fisheries but i can tell you this-
you dont see him eating because crabs are very private creatures and very defensive as you know. now the following web address is a great page on hermit crabs, care, housing and detailed info on feeding them. it also details the moulting stage. it is a good page and you will find most of your answers there.
you need to do a bit of research and get a bit more information on his species care and housing so you can supply him with what he needs and be well informed, there are some good books out there on crabs, i dont know if they would be pet related or just id books but go to the library and grab some. just note, if any one tells you something or you read it on the web, always do a little research and compare information, generally this will help sort out what is true or not nd give you a better idea of info accuracy.
have fun

Thanks so much, I tend to believe the websites out there but you'd think the guy sellin 'em would know a bit more about it. I guess not. Again thanks for your words.
