Urinating
Question: I had a previous cat that had Feline leukemia and urinated all over one room where she was kept. I recently had to have her put to sleep because of her condition and was wondering if i bring a new cat into the house and room where the previous one urinated, will it pick up the same behavior and urinate because of the existing spots. Thanks. Answer: You need to make sure that you clean the spots really well and not with just regualr carpet cleaner, becuase a cat can smell things that a human can not. The pet store sells things like I think it is called Natures Wonders. But, you can find things there that will clean your carpet. If a cat smells pee they will continue to pee or that is my experience. Good luck. Where are you getting your cat from? Have you tried looking at your local shelter? Answer: Get a good enzymatic cleaner, they break down pet odors naturally. I used it to clean up after Mako had accidents in the house. It worked really well. I put it in a spray bottle. You can do the same, get a bottle that mists rather than spray and just mist it all over the flooring and furniture or wherever the cat peed. Let it stand there because it takes time to break down the odors. If you have carpet I would just leave it and not do any other treatments, but if you have linoleum or hardwood, you can clean your floors with the cleaner itself or use a cleaner that has no amonia in it. By misting the enzymatic cleaner you remove then pet odor, and then you can clean your house as normal. You can even clean the litter box with this so the new cat does not smell the other cat's odors. Good Luck! Thanks. If you insist on bringing in a new cat to the same enviroment, your FELV postive cat lived in, I would adopt another positive cat. They need love too. Many are euthanized at the first diagnosis. I would never expose a healthy cat to the same household as a already FELV/FIV positive cat once called home for so long. This has bad written all over it. Answer: I dont think i could go through having another positive cat, its a very heart breaking experience to watch your cat slowly die. Over a two year period my cat had vomiting problems, urinating problems, and at her worst she lost over half her body weight in a very short time. I waiting a few months before i get a new cat (probably from a shelter) because as i have read the virus must die. Thanks for your input. Answer: candyapple, I too had a cat die from leukemia, and it was extremely heartbreaking.:( I'm so sorry about yours. The virus is rather unstable, and doesn't survive that long. I would wait a couple of months before getting another cat, and of course you will throw out any bowls, litterboxes, etc from your last cat. I hope you can get a new kitty to love soon!
