Breathless Dog
Question: We have been looking after a 3 year old staffordshire Bull terrier over the weekend. He has always been a snorting kind of dog and frequently sounds like a pig. Today I took him for a walk in the countryside and he seemed to become very breathless after only a short way. He seemed to be gasping for breath on breathing out with his rib cage heaving with each gasp. I cut the walk short as his breathing seemed to be really laboured and I was concerned. He vomited in the car a couple of times and when we got home he drank a lot of water. It took him over an hour to calm down and now seems to have returned to normal. Is this normal or should we take him to the vet? Answer: While bull breeds are known for their snorting, this kind of reaction is definitely NOT normal. A 3 yr old bull terrier should have energy to spare. Is this dog on heartworm preventative? Answer: Does to me sound like there's something wrong for sure. Has your dog ever been diagnosed with any type of heart condition or respiratory trouble? Pls make a trip to the vet and outline everything that happened (may help to write it all down so you don't forget) Also you said he vomited, was he eating grass or have a large meal just before you went for your run? What was the vomit? Food/bile and foam? Answer: Contact the owners right away, no matter where they are and get their consent to take him to either their Vet or yours, which ever is closer. Better safe than sorry later. Answer: "Whoopse" on my part I read again, I see you're looking after this dog! I concur speak with the dogs family member who trusted you to care for the dog and get vet treatment! Answer: Copyright © 2007 - 2008 www.tendlife.com
