Sore Nose

Question:
Has anyone had this same experience?....

We just adopted a new kitten, who had the sniffles when we got him. The doc did all the typical tests and said the kitten was healthy, and his cold would pass. However, now two of our other cats have the sniffles. What I've never seen before is that the area below the nose in both adult cats has become severely tender and raw looking. One cat is having problems drinking because it hurts so badly. I don't know if it's from the nasal drip and then licking, or what. I'd call my doc, but she's out on Wednesdays. Has anyone ever seen this happen?

Answer:
It sounds like your new kitten has rhinotracheitis, and has passed it on to your other cats.

This is an upper respiratory illness in cats, and it is similiar to a cold in humans.

It's caused by many things - stress, poor nutrition, and anything else that lowers the immune system.

It does often pass on it's own in a couple weeks, in healthy cats. It is more serious in kittens. If your cats have any green discharge from eyes or nose, it means there is a secondary infection, and needs to be treated with antibiotics.

If your cats are having problems eating or drinking, they need to see the vet.
