Sick Dog

Question:
My dog has been having diahrea for the past two days, will eat if i make him an egg or something soft, but wont eat his dog food, however his stomach looks unussually skinny and just recently started to vomit yellow liquid? Any Ideas, I have an appointment for the vet in the morning.

Thanks

Answer:
Your dog is nauseated and/or painful, and the yellow liquid is bile. He may have eaten something that disagrees with him, or it could be an illness.

Let us know what the vet says!!

Answer:
With most cases of the 'runs' and vomiting you should refrain from food intake for 24 hours (unless your dog is immune suppresant or on some form of medical treatment which requires food, or is a puppy)

I would definitely discuss with the vet as LR suggested.

In the meantime don't feed, just give water...allow the GI tract to relax and muscles to stop spasming.

Your vet may suggest soft food after 12-24 hours, and I would give mashed potato to start with boiled chicken cut in small pieces. VERY small meals!

Answer:
Cooked hamburger and rice is good for that. I gave this to my dog after he ate a pen.

Answer:
Cooked hamburger is a no no, can cause a severe case of pancreatitis. Use boiled chicken please !!

WHAT??? Maybe it was boiled hamburger then, because when Bentley got sick the vet said to give him hamburger prepared that way.

Answer:
Some vets do suggest boiled hamburger with the fat drained off of it....and mostly because chicken is 'too expensive' and hamburger is cheaper but not the best remedy IMHO.

Answer:
Well, anyhow, the vet we phoned suggested this, and our normal vet agreed.

Answer:
It really depends on the dog but myself I'd stay away from it, only cause I've experienced chronic and acute pancreatitis attacks with dogs and it's so so hard for them to deal with. See it's the fatty content of the hamburger that could trigger it.

If you boil it and drain off all the fat it wouldn't be so bad. But I hesitate to tell people that incase they don't drain all the fat, so it's easier to say boiled chicken. Different kind of fat content all together.

Every dog will react to it differently, and for a dog with a GI or gut problem, the last thing they need is greasy fat.

Just think yourself, if you have to use 'pepto bismol hint hint' for some reason...you're not gonna go out and buy a hamburger to eat!

Thanks Luba....educating the un-educated can leave one weary and frustrated.

* still boggles my mind*

My miniature poodle who has immune hemolytic anemia has been on prednizone for a few months now and seemed to be doing a lot better. Then about 12 days ago she started with the diarrhea, had it for about 4 days off and on. I took her to the vet who said must just be a virus and sent her home next morning. That very night after already having the diarrhea for the 4 days, she starts vomiting, so I took her back to the vet next morning and they said she may have this or that and kept her in another night. To make a long story short she wasn't better as she started vomiting again and this time could hardly stand up....reminded me of mad-cow disease, anyway i rush her back in again and they keep her all the while doing x-rays, bloodwork, ect. everything turns out fine!!!!!! What could she have?? She is only 1year and 4months old and has been sick off and on her whole life thus far. I do have one suspition though....two times when she has seemed well but then received her vaccine, she gets sick. This last episode happened the night after her needle, any ideas or thoughts on that. I am so worried and all i hear is her tests are all fine!!!! Well no dog is that sick for no reason, wouldn't you all agree?

Answer:
First of all, you should start a new thread - you'll have more chance of someone seeing this and helping
I wish I could tell you something helpful, but my only thought is to try to get a second opinion if you havent already. Sometimes a different vet may be more thorough or have different ideas......
good luck !
