Smelly dog
Question: I have an 11 year old lab/chow cross. She has arthritis and I am giving her glucosamine. I don't know if this has anything to do with her smell, but she chews her joints on 2 of her legs so she has sores there. She gets to run leash free every morning so she gets lots of exercise, but the real question is that she really has begun to smell within the last month. I have bathed her, brushed her, tried different food, but nothing seems to help. She scratches all the time (no fleas) and is constantly licking herself. Does anyone have any ideas? Answer: It sounds like allergies to me. She may have a skin problem that is causing the smell, but other more serious conditions can cause various odours. Your vet could most likely help. Answer: You're vet will be able to test for alergies, so you'll want to check it out with him/her if you can't find a way to make the smell/licking/chewing stop. Answer: I have a dog that has similar problem. She has always been a smelly dog, but as she ages, her oudor is getting worst and worst. Even when we take her for a bath, within 1 h she starts to stink again. My family insist on feeding her human food (meat only) no matter what I say, I wonder if that's the reason. She also drinks her own urine. When I let her out to the balcony, I always have to watch her and tell her to come back into the house right away after peeing or else she will start drinking it...yuck...I really wonder why.... Answer: I took my dog to the vet today and I just wanted you guys to know that she just has an allergic skin disease and lick granuloma. They think that the reason she smells so bad is because she has over active oil glands. They became over active because she has been doing a lot of swimming lately. All I have to do is bath her once a week with oatmeal soap and it should go away. If this doesn't work she probably has an allergy. Thanks for all your advice it really helped my husband as he automatically thought the worst. Answer: Copyright © 2007 - 2008 www.tendlife.com
