Spraying cat needs introduction to new home and animal
Question: Pls can someone help. I have a cat that is spraying (territorial) in the house. Because of this i have now had to find a new place to stay. He is on anti anxiety pills called colmi-calm that don't seemed to have worked yet. still spraying. In the new place there is already a cat and she seems quite territorial too. How do i introduce them and try get my cat to stop spraying and everything to go well. I cannot seperate the two cats for two long as the place is a studio apartment. He is neutered and there is no medical problems either. Pls help and all suggestions would be most appreciated. Answer: First of all, thanks for not dumping your cat!! How long has he been on the clomicalm? It might take awhile to help. Neutered cats who spray in the house often do it because they are stressed and trying to comfort themselves by covering the area with their scent. I'm afraid this move may not help much, and the fact that you cannot keep the cats separate at first is going to make things difficult. Can you get or borrow a large dog cage to keep your cat in for a little while, to see how the cats react to each other? Can you keep him in your bedroom and introduce them slowly that way? Take a towel and rub both of them with it, alternating. Take things each has slept on and switch them so they get used to each other's scent before actually meeting. Do not just take your cat over there and plunk him down in the middle of the apartment. The resident cat will feel invaded and react accordingly, and your cat will be very stressed. The fact that the other cat is a female may help somewhat. You cannot rush the introductions. Hopefully by the time they actually meet, they will be familiar with each other by scent, and it will not go badly. In time, if this is done slowly, they might be good friends and play together. This could help your cat with his nervousness too! Good luck! Answer: Good advise LR. Be sure to keep them seperated when you can't watch them until you know they won't bother each other. It usualy doesn't take a lot of time to bond, and they should be good friends with each other pretty soon. Answer: Thank you for replying to my msg so soon. My cat will be coming in a weeks time so i will definitely try all the things you have said. Wish me luck... Answer: Copyright © 2007 - 2008 www.tendlife.com
