Hookworm Recovery
Question: My 11 month year old female Basset, Betsy, was diagnosed with hookworms around June 7, 2004. She was taken to our Vet. and a stool sample provided to them. She was first treated with Strongid and then a week later treated with Panacure. I am still giving her Strongid once per week. She could not walk for about 2 weeks, then she started walking very wobbly for a few days, then she went another week without walking and now she is back to slowly moving around. She will drink water, but she will not eat. I blend about 2 to 3 cups of Puppy Chow, 2 eggs and warm water in our blender every morning and feed her with a turkey baster twice daily from this mixture. I have been doing this for over 4 weeks now. My Vet. has given me some Nutri-Cal dietary supplement for her. I give her 2 canine vitamins every day, too. I have given her B-12 shots as well. I understand that she had a severe case of hookworms, but we are puzzled why she will not attempt to eat. She will "guard" her plate if another dog comes around, but she will not eat it. She grooms herself by licking her legs and feet where some of the liquid food mixture spills when I feed her. Any suggestions? Answer: This is very odd. Hookworms are usually very easy to get rid with a couple treatments of Panacure. Your puppy must have had a HUGE load of them! Severe infestations can cause anemia and accompanying weakness. I think another vet visit may be in order! The fact that your puppy refuses to eat is quite serious. Answer: Hmmm maybe she's experiencing some nausea. Try giving her a couple teaspoons of UNsweetened applesauce about 15mins before you give the meal. Meals should be smaller and more frequently. Answer: Copyright © 2007 - 2008 www.tendlife.com
