Ummmm... have I been doing a bad thing by letting my toy poodle puppy have access to his rawhide chews whenever he wants? At first he just chewed on them a bit, when he felt like chewing on something (an alternative to my hand or the furniture), but lately he's been getting through them in a couple of days, and he just threw up what looked to be food mixed with a rather large amount of rawhide chew. Ooooppsss... What are the basics on rawhides chews for small dogs? He isn't aggressive with them at all, so I can easily give and take them away if that's what's best. Thanks so much!

I'm told that rawhide isn't good to give your dog. (I've done it in the past, too, not knowing). They say that even small pieces can break off, be swallowed, and swell in your dog's belly- causing all sorts of problems including blockages. Yikes, huh?
Could be that the rawhide swelled up in the belly and your baby didn't have room for it anymore, so out it came!
But, might there be another reason for the vomiting? Have there been any other symptoms, or was this a one-time incident and nothing further is notable?

He has had a cough for over a month, but has been getting treated for it the entire time and it is definitely on the mend. Just after vomitting, he is showing nothing but energy -- too much actually! He's pretty bored of being inside day after day lately, but I have no choice with his cough and the continual rain we've been getting here. Not that much fun always playing inside!

What do you think of high quality rawhide chew made with milk? The kind he threw up on was quite cheap and had little pieces that are probably dangerous, but the vet also gave me a very expensive package of a similar looking thing that she said were good. I'd hate to take them away completely as they've been a great alternative to chewing on absolutely everything else! He's definitely teething right now...

Do not give dogs rawhides. Especially small ones. I thought my goldens were bad for choking on them!

The rawhide can cause an intestinal problem, as well as cause diahhrea in dogs. The best thing for your dog to chew on is marrow bones from the butcher, or nylabones. They cannot take big pieces of the nylabone off, so therefore, no choking. I by the plain ones and boil them in chicken stock. I only give these 2 types of bones to my dogs. I don't need any huge vet bills because of rawhides.

I have heard how bad rawhide is but my dogs love it. I get chews from http://i-pets.com/ in bulk.

My dogs had a lot of tartar build up when I quit giving them chews, now none.

They get two sticks per day.

But I do prefer beef bones myself (well for Sadie LOL)

Rawhide bones are no good for your dog. Get a rubber toy or a Kong and freeze it with water in it and give it to your puppy. I'm sure she'll like that better, and it will be way safer too. If you still are going to feed rawhide, make sure to take it away after an hour of chewing and let it dry over night.

Thanks all -- I believe the expensive sticks are safe (they're not really rawhide, but I don't know what they are exactly since everything on the package is in Japanese) but will still limit Casey's time with them, and I'll chuch the cheapy ones away.
