Please help with newborn puppy, going bad condition...
Question: Hi, please excuse me if violating rules here, but I really need an emergency advise. First of all, let me begin with that I live on the opposite side of the world, it's 4 in the morning, found a few phones of 24 hour duty vets, but noone ever answered. The story is that: in the eve the dog started to give birth, but the first was a dead fetus and blocked, only a paw showing, the dog was screaming. I managed to find a vet and he managed to pull out the dog. Told me to wait - if by tomorrow morning the rest are not born - surgery. Then this one was born /later, after the vet was gone/. The dog did nothing, so I removed the placenta and cut the.. whatever it is called. The puppy is well grown, looks normal color, but from the very beginning was not very active - and ever since it was born 4 hours ago, its activity is decreasing. At first it was crying, now it does not. Still moves though. Does not want milk, seems it has the sucking reflex, but does not suck. Is there a way to help the puppy??? Is there something I can do to "awake" it??? Got an advise to give it drops of coffee and cognac, but this sounds to me rather like euthanasia... should I try it??? Or try to give it milk, water... anything? :( Thanks in advance! Answer: I don't know what else to say but head to the 24hour vet. Answer: Do you have any puppy formula? If you know of any pet stores that open early in the morning or are 24 hours, you can get simulated puppy formula there. But then again, by that time, a vet should be open. I apologize, but I have no ideas. I have never had a dog give birth before. Are you keeping the puppy warm? Have you tried to get it to suckle a lot? I would just keep trying that. here is one site that might help: http://www.showdogsupersite.com/kenl...t/feeding.html Apparently you can express milk from your dog and force feed with a syringe/eyedropper. Could you do that?? Answer: That's the most clever advise and best thing to do. Sadly, as said, in my location no such thing. Only afew are advertized and noone actually answers the phone. This is not America.... Thanks, I'll try it in the morning /if it is still alive/. Sunday... I think the earliest open will be 10 in the morning I keep it warm, keep it next to the mother and put a bottle of warm water on the other side of the puppy. Also an old wool shirt - so I guess it is warm enough. Once again, thanks to both of you for your replies! Answer: here is some advise from one website: You should start getting the puppy to feed just as soon as you can, squeeze one of your bitches nipples to express a bit of milk and rub the puppies nose around it, he will soon get the idea and start suckling. The milk at this stage is very important (the colostrum), it contains all the antibodies to all the diseases which the bitch has encountered also those which she has been vaccinated against so the first 12-36 hours is cruitial to get them feeding. from http://www.dibridboxers.co.uk/BREEDI...UR-BOXER-BITCH Answer: Can you express some of the mother's milk? If so use an eye dropper to drop some in the pups mouth. If you don't have an eye dropper you can use a a clean piece of gauze, soak up some milk and squeeze it in the puppies mouth. Remember that pups cannot poop or pee alone, they need your assistance. I have no idea if any of these methods will work but it is what I would try. Answer: Thanks... did that for a couple of hours The puppy indeed as if shows minor interest and takes the nipple in mouth - and that's it. Keeps the jaws loose, no sucking. I wet its nose with milk, droped milk from the nipple in its mouth.... no result. Well, from what read online and from your kind help - seems I've done it all??? Poor thing, born without luck! Answer: For poop and pee I knowfor a cat I had to take a wet warm cloth and rub their bum, mimicking a mothers tongue to stimulate the organs..I don't know if its the same with a dog though....good luck. This is a time when you sure wish there was a vet in the house Answer: http://www.petalert.com.au/faid/fa19.php This link has some first aid/birthing tips. Answer: Raingirl...great site...hope it helps her with the baby Answer: Ok, tried the milk, managed to give it some drops, but it seems to rather breath it, not swallow it. Just lies on the side and breathing with mouth opened. Maybe has some kind of breathing problems or... anything. Also appeared a dead puppy in the placenta. Dead for a few days already. Seems there was something wrong with the pregnancy. And there are more in the puppies in the dog. Replaced the warm water bottle, seems all I can do is keep the puppy warm for its last hour or couple of hours. And tomorrow morning will take the dog for surgery, lets hope at least the big dog will be Ok. Thank you very much for your kind help, you are great people!!! What were I thinking, newborn puppies sometimes die and noone can do anything. Well, at least tried... Answer: Good luck ...I hope all goes well...Are there any neighbours that you can call who may have experience? Raingirls site seems like a good one Answer: I can't say I'm very experienced - and still I'm the most experienced from the neighbours. No, noone to call. Will try to get a couple of hours of sleep, and at 7 - 7:30 will start calling the clinic for surgery of the mother, though on Sunday that's a bit optimistic! Answer: I think that I've heard that rubbing the puppy gently to stimulate life, it wouldn't hurt to try.........not that I'm all that experienced, good luck little puppy Answer: Hi, sorry to be so late back. Well, the puppie spent with us 12 hours. It was a miracle that is survived the night and actually lived till noon. The pregnancy was very bad. At leats in the very end. Something went wrong and of the total of 7 puppies, only one lived to be born, all the rest had died at least a day prior to the day of birth. But to report the facts, as early as possible took the puppy and the mother dog to one of the good clinics here. They took care immediately of the two, but the puppie was a lost case. Had no sucking reflex and that was not all, seems there was something wrong with it from the very beginning. Some pups just can not survive. The mother was a bigger concern. There were still 3 dead dogs to go, the ... don't know the English word... scanning machine.... showed them very clearly. The doctors decided first to try medicines that would help/force natural birth and only later surgery. Fortunately the medicines helped. Two dogs came out in the morning/noon in the clinic, the last one came out at home in the eve - the doctors gave me a syringe with the medicine and in the evening I made injection to the mother dog and helped her release the last one /yes, I have some experience about injections and etc, no problems about that/. So, finally, the dog is well, looks happy again, became again "talkative", a few more days must pass in order to recover and also needs lots of walking and a little diet in order not to produce too much milk. Really wanted to help the puppy too, but it had no chance to live. Again, special thanks for your support and help! Answer: I'm sorry for the loss of the puppies, glad to hear mother is doing better now. Please, for the sake of your dog and you to never have to go through this again, please please please get her spayed. Answer: I am so sorry for the loss. I can't imagine going through it. I am glad mommy is OK...I hope she doesn't have to live through that again:( Answer: Yes please, for the love of your dog, have her spayed as soon as she is better little puppies. Answer: So sorry for the loss of all the puppies. Glad to hear mom is now doing well. I agree with the others...please get her spayed as soon as possible. BTW, welcome to the forum and we'd love to see pictures of your girl. Answer: I'm very sorry the puppy didn't make it, I'm with the others about spaying the Mother Dog so it doesn;t happen again, what a terrible experience you had, I'm so glad that the Mom dog will be ok. russte Answer: Copyright © 2007 - 2008 www.tendlife.com
