Question:
I am new at this, both being a dog owner and at writing to a forum. yesterday I took my 12 weeks old female beagle to the vet for a vaccination appointment. She had only been to the vet one other time for vaccinations and a well puppy visit at 9 weeks of age. I was told from friends and neighbors that my vet was very good..I wasn't sure where to go.
ANyways, yesterday at the vet the puppy was taken from me and brought back a few minutes later by a tech exclaiming that she had recieved all her vaccinations and was now fully vaccinated. I was a little surprised because I thought we had to return the following month. THe tech continued to tell me to look for any adverse reactions, such as facial swelling, vomiting, diahrea, or extreme lethargy. Well, then I proceeded to the reception area to pay for the shots. The receptionist then realized that they had accidentally given her a rabies vaccine and that it was not usually given until 6 months of age. SHe went to speak to the vet and came back apoligetic, but said that it was not harmful to the puppy at all.
The puppy came home, slept a few hours and seemed a little tired she also did not eat for 4 hours or so after the shots. She was a little off. About five hours after the shots she was stung by a bee. 15 minutes after being stung, her face swelled up, she vomited and collapsed. I rushed her to the vet who gave her steriods, antihistimine, IV etc. He said she was allergic to bees. But couldn't this have been because of the mistake of rabies vaccine been given. The doctor said her heartrate was very low, her lungs were wet etc. But what I saw was the exact syptoms I was told to look for from the vaccines. Help!
By the way she was given.
DHCPP booster
bordatella
rabies
deworming (drontal)
please help.
P.S thank goodness she made it through and seems good now.

Answer:
I'm glad your puppy is going to be o.k.!

The law here is that puppies get a first rabies vaccine at 12 weeks, then again at one year. After that, every 3 years.

It certainly sounds like your puppy had an allergic reaction to the bee sting, especially the facial swelling. Smart of you to rush her to the vet!

Answer:
Hi Kimbop,

Don't be afraid to ask your vet questions. If you don't get satisfactory answers, go to a new vet. I wouldn't tolerate that from my family doctor, so I won't tolerate it from a vet.

Glad to hear puppy will be ok.

Answer:
Poor little puppy! Could be a combination of things too. A real "double whammy"! :(

Answer:
Thats a hard call as it could be a combination of things.

Normally maybe the bee sting wouldn't affect but could it if the immune system is weakened by the vaccine ..yes.

Since we dont know for sure, the next time you vaccinate (if you decide to do it yearly which I don't) then get the vet to break the vaccination down to different times, not all at once.

People are surprised to know their little dog gets the same amount of vaccine a horse would, there is no adjusting the dosage...stupid huh!

Answer:
Why can't the dosage be adjusted?
