Salt toxicity?

Question:
So on of my dumb dogs managed to eat a whole loaf of bread and a teaspoon of salt in the time it took me to go to the bathroom. The bread seems to be moving it's way through, but the salt kind of scares me.

I spoke to an ER vet tech last night and a tech at my regular vet this morning, and neither feel like it should cause a problem. I've probably just been reading too much about salt toxicity in the last 12 hours, but since I can't actually find amounts anywhere I'm still a bit worried.

He was super thirsty last night, but that seems to have passed. Anyone have a dog that is as silly as mine and has eaten salt?

Answer:
I don't think a teaspoon of salt would be a big deal. When layla ate those muffins and scones, each one had on average 650 mg of sodium, so she had 14 grams of sodium. A teaspoon has 2.4 grams of sodium, so I think it should be ok.

Answer:
If you use commercial dog food, they probably have more than a tsp of salt per feeding, so I wouldn't worry at all.

That is exactly the kind of info I was looking for. Thank you!

He doesn't eat kibble, but it's good to know that dogs can eat that much salt regularily and be okay.

......and people say I'm paranoid about my dog.

Answer:
Nothing wrong with being paranoid, just shows that your are a good parent!

Answer:
Yeah, I'd have been the same way. I'm just curious...did you have an actual teaspoon of salt measured out and left on the counter?

Answer:
Yup, I was baking something and he jumped on the counter, knocked it down and ate it, but only after eating a loaf of bread.
I honestly wasn't sure if I was going to cry or strangle him (totally kidding by the way...)

Answer:
For future reference, here is a study a someone dug up for me:

According to a study of cases at the APCC of homemade playdoh ingestion, a dose of salt >1.9 g/kg can be toxic and >4 g/kg can be lethal. 15 ml of salt weighs about 18 g. So if the dog ate about 75 ml of salt, the dose would be 3 g/kg so signs of hypernatremia (ataxia, tremors, seizures) can be seen.
