sick kitten

Question:
Please help me I puchased a 12 week old kitten from the spca.He already had uri and was treated with albon? He has all his shots and was neutered. He has diarehea due to senstivity to certain food? He wasnt doing good ,but today 5 days later seems more alert. They told me at the spca to give him yogurt for the diareha ,I also feed him chicken baby food.He had semi solid poop for 2 days I switched him to plain chicken cat food, he ate it for 2 days now his poop isnt as firm. He is more alert today. But still only walks a little while then lays back down. The day after I bought him home his one eye looked bad ,I could see the third eyelid now it is normal. At the spca they said he could still have minor syptoms of the uri,but could not get it back? Please let me know if anyone has any ideas,He has a vet appointment next week for his rabies shot. thanks, karen

Answer:
Please tell me if I'm understanding this. The SPCA knew this kitten had an upper respiratory illness, yet they neutered him and gave him shots??

I'm not surprised at all that he is not feeling well. Yes, the URI can come back if he is stressed, which I'm sure he is at this point.

Try feeding him plain boiled chicken, and don't even THINK about getting him a rabies vaccination at this point, or any shots of any kind. Keep him in the house at all times. Keep him eating and drinking and he should be okay.

If he is not better by the time you take him to the vet, he will likely need antibiotics. Watch for any green discharge from nose or eyes, as this will indicate a secondary infection and need vet care.

Answer:
Bulldog seems to be much better today. Yes the SPCA did neuter him and gave him shots with the uri. He was rescued from a house with over 60 cats with very unsanitary conditions.I have his records can you tell me if this makes any sense? 5/21-FVR,CPC 6/7 FVR CPC, 6/17-neutured,6/19-FLQ,6/21-Albon 6/29-FVR CPC, 7/14-FVR CPC. I purchased him on 7/24. Does that seem like to many vacinations? They told me that its normal any he is up to date besides rabies, I also have a 1 year old female cat with all her shots and I dont remember that many.

Answer:
Glad the little guy is coming around! "Bulldog" eh?

I dont' know what all those letters mean, but I think he's had enough shots for now, especially if he isnt' going outside.

With where he came from, no wonder he had a URI. Has your other cat been vaccinated against Rhinotracheitis? She will catch it from the kitten.:(

Answer:
Yes my other cat has all her vacinations and not due for boosters until january. I am very careful to keep them apart and keep food bowls separate and also litter boxes. Do you think my other cat still has a chance to contact it even though she is vacinated? The SPCA named him bulldog as a joke because he is so lovable and friendly!!!!Thanks for your help.

Answer:
As long as you wash your hands each time you handle the kitten or any of his stuff, and before you touch your other cat, or her bowls, litterbox etc. she may not get the illness. Even if she does, it would likely very mild - maybe a sneeze or two.

Since your cats are indoor cats, and have already had vaccinations, I personally would not give them any more.

Cats are intolerent of many chemicals, and can even get injection site carcinomas from vaccs.

Answer:
I am sorry to say but after a great day yesterday, Bulldog woke up horrible today. Both of his eyes were coated with green slime and he is sneezing a real lot. All I feed him yesterday was boiled chicken, he ate about 3 legs and probally would have eaten more but I was afraid he would get sick. Diareha is back today.I tried to feed him chicken this morning, but he seems like he wants it but cant get it down. It sounds like he is coughing or choking. He is still walking around and being curious,I guess thats a good sign. Today is Saturday,I probally cant get him to the vet until Monday. Do you think that is too long? Also when I got him they gave me 2 months of Shelter Care insurance.Do you know anything about that? Do I still pay for office visits and medication? Thanks

Answer:
I don't know about the insurance, but you could probably call the emergency vet and they can advise if they accept it and what would be covered. It sounds like little Bulldog needs help. If he was your child, you surely wouldn't make him wait til Monday. I'm sorry he's having this problem!

Answer:
I sounds like full-blown rhino, with secondary infection. He needs a vet.

Did you register online for the Sheltercare?? If not go HERE and do so immediately.

The vet care should be covered!

Let us know what happens!

Answer:
I will take him to the vet today. One question, if he has it again and they treat it again what are the chances of it coming back? Is this more kitten going to be sick the rest of his life? I am thinking about taking him back to the Spca if that is the case.My 8 year old daughter is starting to get attached to him. I wont really let her near him anymore because I know he feels horrible and I dont want him to be bothered. I really want to keep him,I have no idea what I should do. I think the SPCA should have warned me this might have happened. I asked alot of questions and they assured me there was no chance of the virus returning or no chance my other cat could contact it. I wish I knew more about it then.

Answer:
Most cats are exposed to, or get rhino at some point in their lives. This kitten has it because of all that has happened to him in such a short time, and he was no doubt malnourished. Rhino is very common in shelters and vet's offices. We see this very often, since we rescue cats from all kinds of situations.

There is no guarantee that ANY cat you get won't come down with it, and it is just basically comparable to a cold in humans. It's not serious, and once your kitten is healthy, he may never get it again. But of course, some people get sinus infections along with colds, and that is what is happening with this kitten.

He's had his vaccinations, so any future outbreaks should be very mild. Rhino is particularly hard on kittens.

My 3 cats recently had a little outbreak of rhino, but it consisted of sneezing and coughing only, and they did not even need a vet. Like a human cold, it usually passes in 10 days or so.

Please don't abandon this baby. Not only would it be cruel to this kitten, but think of how this will look to your young daughter.:( You don't want her to think animals are disposable, or that they are dumped if they are not perfect.

Answer:
you are right I shouldn't get rid of him. He is doing much better. When he woke up this morning he had the green stuff in his eyes.I wiped it off with a warm cloth. It has not come back. He is still sneezing but not as much.He ate 3 times (chicken) and is drinking normally. He still has diareha , it is not really thin and only went 2 times in 6 hours. He didnt go at all yesterday and he ate a real lot. Do you think it is from the chicken? His eyes are clear and wide open and he is very active. Do you think I should still take him today? My other cat is not happy with the introduction of the kitten. I keep them separate. She hisses and growls and cries to go outside.I let her out,its not the first time, she goes out occasionally. Anyway, do you think this may have brought on the syptoms in Bulldog? I am starting over with the introduction,I am aware of the process.

Answer:
You're feeding him way too much, which is something that also can cause diarhhrea.

Boil some rice, and add some of the water to the chicken. Feed him SMALL meals frequently -just a bit at a time - maybe two tablespoons. His stomach cannot handle too much food at once.

And yes, keep his eyes and nose cleaned off of all discharge. If the green discharge continues, then he must see a vet.

Answer:
I have a cat about 3 yrs old. Yesterday I took her outdoor w/me as a usual daily routine we have and she ate grass. (She often does) She threw up and then I noticed later in the day that she had like a clear thick almost gelatin like mucous or drainage coming from her mouth area and I wiped her. Someone told me to give her gatorade and I also gave her yogurt in case she was poisoned. Since then I noticed as well that she has a clear thin discharge dripping from her mouth or nose area. I can see it drip, it looks like its coming from the nose but I think its coming from the mouth. I am not sure. Could someone please help as I am very concerned. I stayed up all nite with her worried and keeping watch on her.

Answer:
You need to get this kitty to a vet. No one can diagnose over the net.

Answer:
When my puppy had the poops really bad the vet told me to try some mashed potatoes (plain) and that made his poo alot more solid. I had to feed my puppy every two hours ( 3 tsp. of food) the smaller you can cut up the chicken the better. The less her stomach has to do the better.
