Question:
My kitty has a hernia in her belly. One vet told me it will either go away on it's own, or not. But it will never cause her any trouble. Another vet said it would have to be corrected before she gets fixed. Anyone else have a kitty with a hernia? Plus I cannot get her fixed until she's 6 months old. I'm worried she'll go into heat before than. What are the early warning signs?

When we adopted Phoebe, there was another pup at the shelter with what the shelter people told me was an umbilical hernia. This might be what your kitten has. Basically, when the umbilical cord fell off, the hole didn't close up. I don't know if animals react the same way, but my newborn son had a minor one, so I investigated them thoroughly! In most cases, it will repair itself within a year. If it does not, or if it is a severe case (and you'd know because the animal would be in pain), then it would have to be surgically corrected.

As for the going into heat thing - can't help you there, my cat's a neutered male!

I dont' know about the hernia, but you will know when your cat is in heat. She will likely howl, roll around on her back, crouch down with her butt in the air,and try to get out.

Make sure you keep her in the house, as cats in heat will go to great lengths to get outside, and often succeed.
