Upper respitory infection

Question:
Hello about 2 weeks ago I adopted a 3 month old kitten at a local shelter. I adopted on a friday and picked him up tuesday after we was neutered. When I went to pick him up the guy told me he had uri which is very common for them to catch while under anisetics. well we brought him home on a tuesday and took him to the vet on thursday and they gave me anticbotics. They gave me something called clavamox i believe and i gave it to him for 7 days twice a day and he hasnt been getting better. actually he has gotten a bit worse. at first he just had a bit of a runny nose and sneeze, now his eyes are having a very thin mucas i guess come out or could be just tears. Im wondering if he could be getting sick because he just lives mostly in my room, litter box food and sleeps in here but is let out to the rest of the house most of the day. could having everything in my room make him sick, also i spray febreze in the room could that make him have allergies. Thanks
-Lizzie

Answer:
Stop spraying the Fabreeze at once. This kitten already has respiratory problems, and inhaling this stuff certainly could affect him, not to mention it's going in his food and water. Do not spray anything at all. Open the windows and completely air the room out.

Is he eating and drinking? Clavamox can cause nausea. IF he is not eating and drinking, he needs to go back to the vet.

If he is, then wait a few days and see how he does without the Fabreeze. Use litter that has as little dust as possible.

Keep his eyes and nose wiped clean, and check for any green discharge.

Answer:
Lucky Rescue, do you know if URI in cats is similar to kennel cough in dogs? 'Cuz BOY do those symptoms sound familiar!

Answer:
Thank you i have stopped with the febreze. also he eat and drinks just fine. also he is still using his litter box and ive checked it and there are no unnormal signs in there. He is also very active and loves to play the only thing i see wrong with him are his runny eyes and nose.
-thanks

It is my understanding that rhinotracheitis is not the same as kennel cough. However the secondary infection of rhino may cause coughing in cats, and the coughing may be caused by the same bordatella bacteria that results in kennel cough in dogs.

I believe untreated kennel cough is more serious than simple rhino in cats.

Hope I got that right!

Answer:
U.R.I is to cats is what kennel cough is to dogs. Once your kitty gets it she will then have it for life. Her symptoms should not reoccur but she will be a host which means that she can pass it to other felines. I just learned that in my course and I couldn't believe it myself. :(

Answer:

pls read about oil of oregano it may be very beneficial

seems like its oregano week lol

Thanks LuckyRescue and hateinlaws for your info. Phoebe was treated immediately for her kennel cough and is doing great now. I was asking because she, too, got worse after starting the meds and then continued with the booger nose for a couple of days after completing her meds. The vet said this was nothing to worry about, and she was right. She cleared up completely a few days later.

So, candyapplevirus, the continued discharge may be normal, if it's only been a few days since you've completed the meds. As for Fabreeze - I personally don't use it much (only when company's coming ), so I really can't comment on how it affects my pets.
