Dog vomits often but is fine otherwise.

Question:
Hi. My welsh terrier is almost 2 and she seems perfectly healthy except she vomits quite often. If it is yellow bile, she will heave first but sometimes several hours after eating she will throw up food with no warning. She usually eats just fine. Sometimes she misses a meal. She plays and seems very happy otherwise. Does anyone have any insight for me?

Answer:
That's what Boo did when he was getting chicken food (he's intolerant to chicken). What are you feeding him now? Maybe you need to change meat sources.

Answer:
When is she throwing up bile - in the morning? How many times do you feed your dog a day? and do you feed your dog at the same time every day??

Answer:
We feed her 2x/day. Morning and evening. She did not tolerate the Medi-Cal dry we feed our Airedale. She was very gaseous. We switched her to Medi-Cal gastro formula, combination of dry with a little bit of canned. The gastro formula did alleviate the gas problem. The bile is usually brought up in the morning and our vet did suggest we give her a few kibble right before bed which sometimes works but not always. This behaviour has been ongoing. It is very puzzling. She has been xrayed but nothing was found.

Answer:
IMO, it's time to switch to a meatier food. Medi-cal is mostly corn, which most dogs have trouble with.

Answer:
i second the motion. dogs need meat, not corn and grains and by-products... medical gastro is junk (sorry). please search the dog food archives for excellent information on what a good food is (there are many on the market to relieve gassy dogs) and you will probably see an improvement in your dog... good luck

Answer:
I have to third the motion. Please check out the dog food forum here to find a better option, then if you have any questions, please ask.

Answer:
Thanks. I will check it out!

Answer:
If switching to a good nutrition does not work, I would ask the vet about the possibility of inflammatory gastritis, although that is only diagnosed with a gastroscopy.
Also bile is very acid and does damage in the stomach. I would suggest that you ask your vet what he/she thought of using Famotidine for a certain period of time. You get it at the pharmacy with a vet prescription. It reduces some of the acidity and the urge to vomit. Of course you would need to discuss this with your vet. Throwing up for so long at such a regular basis is not normal, and I would suspect is not ONLY an issue of nutrition (of course the latter is also important).

Answer:
...any update on your terrier?

Answer:
Benny used to do this too when I fed him anything with chicken in it. He would also do it in the morning mostly before I fed him. Now I feed him first thing, even before he goes out and it seems to have helped.
