weeds
Question: I have a question... Are there weeds out there that can make dogs sick? My dog got sick Tuesday and now on the mend. I have been in contact with the vetover the last week and did everything he said to do and today he is much better. He never got lethargic, he always greeted me with a wagging tail, just getting sick allot (it was white, mucousy and stringy) and had the runs a little bit...(just today) plus he wouldn't eat but drank allot of water. I don't keep no poisons out side or even use them, because I do have 2 dogs, 2 cats and a horse and 2 kids as well. BUT I do live on a acreage and the area he had some access too had some tall weeds. He is never left to wander, unless he is with us and he never takes off and we have checked his kennel and surrounding area and just can not find anything that could of made him sick, at least no signs of anything. There was a wood pile he could get to, but not the whole thing, I was thinking a spider bite, but I can't find no bite mark or swelling anywhere. ANy info would be great...so I can prevent this from happening again. Thanks ~T Answer: There are plants that can make dogs sick. "Some mildly toxic plants include chrysanthemum, columbine, daffodil (bulb), eucalyptus, gladiolus, holly, iris, milkweed, oak (acorns), poppy, sago palm, and wisteria. Ingestion of these plants causes minor illnesses such as vomiting or diarrhea." Answer: Thank you... I did some searches on these and it looking like the Milkweed one I do have out there... Our acreage use to be farm land at one point...and no one lived here for about a year before we bought the new house etc when the land was sold off in sections.... I had asked the vet if there was weeds that would make him sick and they said yes..but never said what...Knowing now what they are is a great help.. Thank you so much for the info... ~Tammy Answer: Dogs can and do get into a lot of things and it's impossible to stop it or you would have to pull every flower tree bush shrub weed from your yard ! But as LR says some of them can make ur dog sick. It's possible the dog could have also ate a dead bird/mouse?? That would do it too! I am still baffled as to what happened....But I am glad he is getting better. I know my dh found a meat wrapper, and we were thinking he might of gotten into that, he is one for rooting around for garbage and has gotten in some before, he is not one for eating dead animals though, But I also noticed a bite of some sort on his leg that is healing, and he was laying by a wood pile so maybe he got bit by a spider...But I don't know if that would of caused such a big reaction with him throwing up etc. I contacted the vet again this morning to let them know he is better, and she gave me some stuff to feed him to get him back to eating etc. (ie: boiled chicken, rice, plain yogurt) He even started barking last night so I know he is on the mend.... ~Tammy Answer: Copyright © 2007 - 2008 www.tendlife.com
