Question: Hello, I am new to this, so bear with me. I have a 23 month old black lab, who has developed a yeast infection (this is a recurrent thing with her) in her left ear. Prior to my discovering this, I was concerned with her vomiting a couple of times during the night, I spoke with my local vet's office and was advised to try Tums, as it may be Acid Reflux. I made an appt. for her to see him on 8/9 but since she stopped the "foamy night-time vomiting" with the Tums, I cancelled the appt. Well, wouldn't you know it, but later that day I discovered the yeast smell in her ear, so I cleansed them and started using the solution that she'd had been given previously, since he told me it would recur. I was honestly TOO embarrassed to call again, as I am already a "nervous mother" (this is my first dog, and I don't have children) So, here it is 1 week later, the ear is smelling better, less discharge, etc... but she now seems to have gotten a cold. She sneezes several times a day, but today I noticed this hacking "asthmatic" cough. That would be the only way to describe it, or also like having to "gak" up a hairball. I am a nurse, so I know about people to a certain degree, but not this stuff!! Does anyone have a clue? I won't be able to get her to the vet until Thurs. due to work. Thank you Answer: Never be embarassed to call the vet. You're not bothering them - that's what they do for a living and they're glad when people take proper care of their pets!. Has your dog been vaccinated against Kennel Cough (bordatella vax?) The type of cough you are describing sounds like that. Answer: Agree with LR you can call anytime they're used to it. Answer: I realize your post is not just about the yeast infection....but in case this yeast infection occurs over and over, I know I am not a vet...but my Delaney used to get them very often. The meds the vet gave her helped a little but the infections always came back. I started giving her a tablespoon of yogurt each night when she ate dinner, she thinks it is a treat and so far not another ear infection. If anyone knows of any problems with dogs and yogurt, please let me know. The vet said he didn't think it would hurt her at all. Also, it is low-fat Answer: I've heard that yogurt is fine, and can also help digestion and stuff. But I'm not a vet either... About ear infections -- my dog also has a yeast infection in his ear, and my vet is treating him for 25 days, on something (I'm in Korea where they don't even tell PEOPLE what meds they are prescribing), with 3 check ups involved. It seemed excessive to me, especially when he seemed so much better after a few days, but after reading these posts I'm wondering if the vets here are on to something? Maybe he's on for such a long haul to ensure it doesn't recur? I just want to add that my vet is VERY good and is definitely not trying to just get money from me. They have given me lots of discounts, especially when my dog had a persistent cough, and some freebies here and there with food and treats too. Answer: of course, plain yogurt seems like the right choice-- no sense loading your pooch up on sugar every night!!! Answer: Plain yogurt and don't use the ones sweetened with artificial sweeteners. Real plain yogurt! Answer: Copyright © 2007 - 2008 www.tendlife.com
