Sneezing Cats
Question: First I wanted to say that the kittens I was taking care of started sneezing about a few days after we got them, with a little bit of discharge from their noses. My sister took them to the vet and she didn't say they had a URI, it was more like a cold? She gave them antibiotics anyway, and they are ok and eating on their own (no more bottle) and off to their new homes. Almost right after they went to the vet, all of my cats started sneezing, ALL 4 of them. It's been about 5 days now but not a one of them is producing mucus from eyes or nose. I called my vet about them (and told them about the kittens) and they said as long as there is no discharge that they are ok. Even with the kittens being sick, she said it could be allergies, but all 4 of them at the exact same time? I don't get it. She said if their noses or eyes become runny I should call them and take only one in and she'd give me the meds for all 4, I thought that was pretty nice. I just don't know how long I should wait, even if it doesn't get worse, it seems like every time I turn around a cat is having a sneezing fit. That also makes me think allergies, sneezing fit=allergies... once in a while sneeze, runny nose=cold? What do you think? I wish they could just tell me how they are feeling, maybe then I'd know which it was. Ughhh! Answer: Animals don't sneeze when they have allergies. Your kittens have a URI - probably rhinotreacheitis - and have passed it to your cats. This is VERY common, and in healthy cats, should pass in a week or so. Have you cats been vaccinated at all? Just watch them, and if you see a green discharge from eyes or nose, you will likely need antibiotics for them, as this is a sign of secondary infection. My own cats all had a little bout with rhino recently, and got over it just fine with no vet visit. Answer: They all had their shots when we first got them, but none since. Sneaky's eyes had clear stuff today, definitely not green or yellow. My guess is that it will turn one of the two? I'm glad your cats got over it with no meds, it gives me hope that mine will too! Thanks, Lucky. Answer: Since your cats were vaccinated, I wouldn't worry as long as the discharge is clear, and they are eating and drinking normally. Since your cats have now been exposed to the rhino virus, they will always carry it, but it may never become active again. Answer: I didn't know that, that they will always carry it. I hope they don't get it again, I hate seeing them sneeze all the time. Oh yeah, that's weird you said animals don't sneeze when they have allergies, I wonder why the vet said that? I'm thinking maybe it was the receptionist, not the vet, I was being transferred back and forth between them. Answer: My 2 cats are also sneezing a lot these days. What's rhinotreacheitis? I adopted them 2 months ago so I have no idea if they were given the injections. I took them to the vet for a gieratic cat blood test and the vet said they are both normal. What's making them sneeze??? Answer: Copyright © 2007 - 2008 www.tendlife.com
