Dog has a Crusty Nose

Question:
I have a labrador with a crusty nose. I looks really dry and it is uncomfortable for him when I touch it. He sounds nasally at night a little and has a very slight runny discharge from one nostril. He has all the energy and usual playfullness, so he does not feel bad. I have been using a clean towel wrung out with warm water and oilve oil to see if I can get it to get back to normal. He had this once before and it went away, what might be causing this and should I be worried? It sometimes splits when it is really dry, I know noses are tender... so am looking for some advise

Answer:
Did you ever take your dog to a vet over this?

Answer:
No it hasnt been a concern until now, before it was only for a day or so and it went away, now it looks worse, and I only noticed it on Friday

Answer:
I think you should let your vet take a look at it. There have been others on here with problems like that and they developed into some very serious complications. Pls go let your vet look at it.

I was going to post the thread for this poster to read, but I can't find it. Luba do you know where it is? (The thread with the terrible nose problem....you helped this one out by referring them to guelph and using the or. oil)

Thanks for the thread, I was looking for it before I posted but there are so many! I appreciate the info and the pictures of the shepard, his nose looks just like Roo's does. I will be making an appointment today. It is in the arly stages and looked better today. My dog is also a pound dog and a very welcome addition to the family, I do not want anything to happen to him.

Thanks for all your help. I took him to the vet and it seems (for now) to be allergies. I am giving him sudaphed and using Vitamin e on his nose and it is clearing up. It did come about after a hike in the mountains. I will keep an eye on it and hopefully it will be taken care of.

Answer:
Hike in the Mountains! LUCKY YOU. I used to hike in the mountains when I was in Newfoundland with my dogs. How we? miss it.

Lucky dog found a new owner that did the right thing for his nose and takes him hiking too.
