Ouch!! Cute but painful
Question: My kitten, ever since i got him, is an aggresive player. He likes to bite me, its cute because sometimes he is gentle, but then other times he bites and cuts me. Certain times I could be walking by and he will attack my leg. . I dont know how to make him stop, i tried yelling words like STOP and NO! But he just walks away. Is this natural, how can i make him stop? Also he likes scratching his paws on my leg or on my back while he is streching. Answer: I hear you! I have exactly the same kind of cat. I have managed to reduce the attacks by getting a house-dress with pockets. I carried a squirt bottle in my pocket for at least 3 months. Every time she lunged at me I squirted her. It seemed to work very well . . . until just lately when she has started this again. Back to the old squirt bottle. Another thing that works is not to take too many steps at a time. Take about 5 steps then turn around and look him in the eye and tell him you can see him. Then continue walking. They won't lunge and bite if you are looking their way. I sincerely believe they are just playing, albeit too rough. Does anyone else have any suggestions? Answer: They don't lunge when you're looking? Really?? Then maybe you can try what farmers in India do to prevent tiger attacks. They wear masks on the backs of their heads, because (apparently) a tiger won't attack you face-on, only from behind! OK, maybe you'll feel silly walking around with a mask on the back of your head. All you really need is a pair of eyes back there. So maybe stick a pair of huge eyes on a baseball cap and wear that. Maybe it'll work for your little tigers too (at least until they out-grow the attacking stage). Answer: My puppy (don't know if that's the same as a cat) does the same thing, and in puppy kindergarden they taught us to use the water spray idea or (this is what I do), fill a can with coins and shake it next to its ear everytime they bite you while saying NO. This way, they will associate biting you with a negative reaction. Hope it works! Answer: My cat was this way from the start. He is 3 years old now, and still that way. As for the water spray...........not the solution for my cat. He jumps in the shower with me. Doesnt mind water at all. He has mellowed a litte..........doesnt attack me while I am sleeping anymore but he will still come up behind me for no reason and bite. :( Answer: A kitten is a kitten,is a kitten, any thing that moves is fair game which to me is part of the fun of having a kitten. I hope you knew a little about these cute fur-balls before getting one Play with him with toys, not your hands, whatever you do,don't ever punish him for being a kitten. My hands use to look like roadmaps every time we got a new kitten. Use some simple toys like strings, balls over paper etc...and keep your hands away. Soon enough he'll be grown up and you'll complain he sleeps too much Asun, please don't shake a can with coins in little Tubbys ear,you might make him deaf and whatever else....surely it cannot be good for him, especially since he already has healthproblems. Answer: My puppy is also quite an aggresive player - she bites and scratches, I know she isn't doing it on purpose, she just gets carried away. Whenever she gets hyper and bites me, I always put her down and turn my back on her. Either that or I stop playing and go away and do something else. She usually realises she's done wrong and usually climbs onto my lap and licks my hands. Do this with your kitten, and once he realises he's done wrong give him a treat so he assosciates gentle playing with treats. I hope this helps Answer: Letsee, you could try this: every time he attacks you, pick him up and put him in a corner of the room and walk away. If he does it again, keep doing it. Or you can completely ignore it and keep walking. Answer: Thanks for the help everyone! I've tried picking him up and putting him in a corner and walkng away but he still thinks it's playtime and attacks my legs as i walk away. I dont mind sometimes because it's so cute but its just the scars on my arms and legs from him. :( sometimes he gets really aggresive with his toys or he will get hyper and will start running really fast around the house and make this growling noise. But one thing he doesn't like is being ignored, if i ignore him he first will start yelling at me and then he will hit me in the face, almost like a slap and then run away. I will try the water thing since he absoultly hates getting wet. Thanks again everyone Answer: I just joined the site today and don't really know how to get to the right place but maybe can start here. I just got a little kitten who scratches. I have learned to say "OUCH" loudly and put her away from me. It works fairly well. However, before I learned to do this, she scratched my arms and hands badly. One of my arms isn't healing. It looks like poisin ivy and itches like crazy. I've tried antibiotic ointment and anti-itch meds and nothing works. It's about 2 wks old now and should have healed. has anyone had a similiar experience and what did you do about it? I have no insurance and hesitate to go to a Dr. about something that can be dealt with at home. Thanks for any help. Answer: I would yell "OW!" whenever my kittens accidentally scratched me. They quickly figured out that "OW" meant that playtime would stop. Now, at about ten months old, they're very good about not scratching! It does happen by accident once in a while. It will take time for them to learn, but don't give up. Also, be sure not to play with them with your hands or fingers, that will only confuse the issue. Answer: My boyfriend's cat played hard when she was a kitten, she'd do the sneak attack from under the bed move when ever she could. She would also sneak attack your leg (she would actually climb up your pant leg if you let her). My boyfriend liked this behaviour so he'd play it up and get her really excited to keep her going. I on the other hand didn't like being bitten or scratched and would push her away from me or simply ignore her after saying a loud NO. She caught on and figured out my boyfriend liked to play and I was better for cuddling. She's almost 2 now and every once and while, you'll see my boyfriend with a scratch on his noce 'cause the cat bite him, but she's sweet and gentle as can be with me. All that to say, ignore the behaviour you don't want, encourage the playing you do want (lets face they are full of energy so you have to find a nice balance, I personally like the bags of twoonie sized pompoms from the dollar store cats love chasing those around).
