Weakness in Great Dane ?? Possible Wobblers
Question: Hi folks, Many of you will know Sadie's boyfriend Tanner, a young Great Dane and just the sweetest thing ever saddle size The past few days Tanner has been showing signs of weakness in his hind end, stumbling, dropping and falling down the stairs. After xrays to the spine and hips the vet did 'not' rule out Wobblers syndrome (more commonly seen in Dobies). I've done some research for his family and fwd'd it to them but am looking for anyone who may know of someone with a Dane with the same symptoms. Any information would greatly be appreciated and I'll fwd to his family. It's so sad to see him this way, he is such a glorious dog. This is Tanner (with his girlfriend) Answer: Where is Cactus Flower when you need her??? LOL She will prolly be able to help. I do not know but I hope that he starts to feel better soon so your baby can have her playmate again. (and make all the other dogs on here jealous ) Answer: Ahhh thank you princess! Answer: Wobblers Syndrome a condition of the nerve cord seen mostly in Great danes and Dobermans. Results from nerve cord damage, caused by a loosness in the joint between the base of the skull and the very first neck vertebra. The dog is very unco-ordinated when walking around and will sometimes cross it's front legs when it turns in a tight circle. Severe forms of the disease, which can be progressive, can mimic the symptoms of a slipped disc, with discomfort in the neck region or even paralysis of the legs. Surgery can be performed on a wobbler dog to strengthen the first intervetebral space and prevent the nerve cord from being compressed in that area. If Wobblers is diagnosed for sure, have your vet refer you to an orthopedic specialist for Sx. (if that is an option, as it does cost huge $) :( I do hope that all goes well. He's quite the handsome ham! I will keep my ears out for other cases. Maybe a wobblers support group could be started. There's probably still alot to learn about this condition. How about great dane rescue groups? Maybe they know of wobbler dogs that have been placed with families? atleast this family has your friendship and knowledge Luba Answer: Luba We hope everything works out well for Tanner, what a great looking dog I love them large and yet they think they are a lap dog. My boss has one so I will ask her if she has any info. That photo is sweet Sadie is lucky to have such a good looking man in her life. Answer: Thanks guys so much, I really really do appreciate it and I know they do as well!!! I just found out that University of Guelph is conducting a study on Wobblers in Dobies so if anyone has a dobie and wants to participate let me know and I'll send you the contact information.
