Fleas!!! Ew Ew Ew Ew Ew
Question: Ok, first off just know that I am just a big freakin baby when it comes to bugs! Fleas in particular are the enemy in question, (I get all this from my mom). We have just taken in some stray kittens and man do they have fleas! But the dilemma is that they are too young for flea bath/monthly treatments, my worry is that the fleas will be all over my spare room in the next week or two before we can treat the cats, and from there all over my house! (I also have 3 other cats) Now I was told by a Vet not to use any Zodiac products, but still would like to treat the bed/ carpet and blankets/towels, as I don't want to vacuum in there and scare the bejeeses out of the poor little things, so I'm hoping for a spray of some sort. They are eating well and playing and sleeping. I have been trying to comb out some of the fleas and immediately drown them in hot water with baby shampoo, but get really freaked out when they jump! (One startled me and I gasped and scared the poor kitties.) I know the easy answer here is get over it....but I dont see that happening anytime soon! And I know that the fleas are harmful to the kittens, and they need to be treated asap. (I am calling the vet in a few minutes to make yearly appointments for our three and plan to ask about the Revolution and the age of the kittens.) Any advice (or support) is much appreciated! Answer: I was recently taking care of kittens that were too young for flea treatments/flea baths and what we did was give them a bath in Dawn dish detergent. Any soap will kill fleas if left on long enough. We got them all wet (except face and inner ears) and put the soap on them and a good lather, left it on for 5-10 minutes rinsed and then repeated. Just remember to keep them warm during the whole thing... you can even wrap them in a blanket/towel while you are waiting to rinse. Doing this killed all the fleas but some of them still had to be picked off, but as long as they're dead it shouldn't be hard. Depending on how many you have (kittens I mean) it will have to be a team effort and the room they are staying in should be cleaned well before putting them back in after bathing. Good luck and a thanks to you for taking them in!! Do you know how old they are? Answer: Make sure when you get them wet, to first apply the soap around the neck area and around their little "pooper". The fleas will try to scurry up the kitten's head and could make things difficult for you, but the ring of soap should help things. Take some soapy water (really soapy) and make a collar of soap. This'll stop the little buggars! Answer: Great idea!!! Answer: Yes...well thanks all....GOOD tips! I also did get in touch with my vet, and I will be taking the little fellas and their sister in on Friday. They have a kitten version of revolution that they are going to gear to each ones weight. And I am going to use another round on my cats after they go for their shots. Then its all up to the Kirby!(my vacuum) I had no idea you could use dish soap on a cat! I was told to only use mild baby shampoo. Oh and man is their mamma not happy with me right now....she still has the last kitten with her and won't let us get any where near it!!! (Little does she know I'm taking her and her boyfriend in too!!!) Anyhow back to the battle field.... Bodycount: Fleas=19 Me=a few very panicky moments, but no long term injuries yet! Answer: While at your vets, get a vetcem spray (siphorol) for your house and spray the whole house. Even places the kitten haven't been. (fleas travel). Vacuum EVERYWHERE, EVERYTHING. Put your vacuum bag in a bag and put in an outside garbage. Revolution all the cats in the house. Good luck Answer: I so HATE vacuuming!!! LOL But I hate fleas MORE!!!! Ya I have been vacuuming the rest of the house often, but will wait till the little ones see the vet before traumatizing them with the vacuum. And with the vet sprays, can I use them near the kittens? Also I was not aware but did you know that when you bring in outdoor cats, the best place for them is the bathroom, that way they can't hide and have to get to know you, and if they have fleas they can't latch onto the carpet! I'm keeping that in mind for when I take in the two older cats as they have not been around people. Good thing I have 2 bathrooms!!! Answer: obviously don't spray the house spray directly at the gang, but I've used it in the house when they've been there. I just used it in the rooms they weren't in and then moved them to the first room and sprayed the last. Answer: Well thanks all, house has been de-flead as well as the little kittens!!! Who are quite spunky I might add! Answer: Copyright © 2007 - 2008 www.tendlife.com
