diarrhea in dogs

Question:
My dog has had diarrhea for more than two days and has been on fast for 24 hrs. He still has diarrhea, I am surprised because there should be nothing in his stomach but he is drinking alot of water and I give him ice cubes and is happy. Right now he is always begging for food, I was going to feed him rice. I have been giving him Pepto Bismo since last night. Does Pepto Bismo really work or is there something wlse I should give him? I have read the other posts but none really say what to do if your dog is acting the same and still drinking and is hungry.
Thanks in advance for your time.

Answer:
When my puppy had parvo the vet told me to give him pepto or kopectate (SPELLING) I gave him both. What has the vet said?

Answer:
Hi there. Pepto does slow the gut down, but after any length of time, I would be taking a stool sample, (try and scrape a fresh one up!) and the dog to the vet. It is good that the dog is thirsty, as with diarrhea, they can become very dehydrated quickly. I would not be giving Pepto continually either, as that may just be masking the problem, rather, let the vet have a look and find the source.

If you do feed your dog, I would do it in small amounts and see if he can hold it, as the dog is hungry and showing an interest, (good sign!). Rice is a good start. My rule of thumb is do not leave a sick pet untreated for long, as their health can deteriorate very rapidly. They can't tell you what the problem is verbally, and are able to "hide" their pain from us with tail-wagging and snuggles and act fairly normal, when inside, it really feels bad. But they want to please us, so they put on a good front.

I hope this is helpful.

Answer:
Thanks you have been very helpful I never thought of the Pepto masking the problem. I just gave him a little rice and I'll see how he does this afternoon. If no changes I am bringing him to the vet later in the afternoon. Hopefully nothing serious is wrong. Thanks again!
