My cats bottom is a little bit swollen

Question:
I just noticed this today my cats bottom lip is a bit swollen it dosen't seem to bother her at all but i would like to know the cause of this and should i be worryerd.I can't think of anything that could cause this but we did a few days ago just get the cat a water foutain to drink from. could that be the problem?

Answer:
The fountain shouldn't be causing a problem, but check it over incase there are any rough bits etc.

The lip should be looked at by a vet, as it could be anything from an allergic reaction to a squamous cell carcinoma. Lets hope that it's something simple. But these problems are better looked at before they do start to cause pain.

Good luck and keep us updated

Answer:
My cat recently had a swollen lower lip that looked a bit strange although it was causing her no problems in regard to eating or drinking - in fact she acted as though nothing was wrong! We took her to the vets and he diagnosed a rodent ulcer, the cause of which can be many things but usually an allergic reaction. He gave her a steroid shot and within 2 days the swelling had gone right down. Maybe this is the problem?

Answer:
I have heard of some cats getting a swollen lip because of a reaction to the plastic in the food/water bowls.

Answer:
My Cat's chin/ bottom lip used to get swollen pretty badly when she was drinking from the fountain or the tap in the bathtub. The water would dribble all down her chin and it would remain wet for quite a while bec she couldnt get it all off.

As soon as I stoped giving her water in the fountain or in the tub she stoped getting the swelling. I'm not 100% positive that it's the cause, it could be totally coincidental.

I do remember something about water and hot spots on the skin.... can't recall where I heard it though, but you might what to look that up?

Answer:
When this happened to my two girls at the same time, it was the kind of food I was feeding them, they were having a reaction to one or more of the ingredients. My vet said it is very common. But it is always safer to get that opinion striaght from the vet!
