Kitten naps in litter box

Question:
I've never experienced this before. I acquired a new kitten (5 months old). I have a 4 year old cat. They have bonded quite well, playing, sleeping and cleaning one another. But the kitten occassionally can be found napping in the litter box. She seems to only do this when the box is clean (but not just when new litter, just when no lumps in the litter). The box is located in a separate room from the food and water and all other activities. She moves easily into and out of the room through a cat door. Sometimes she just decides to curl up in the box. This seems to pose risks to the the human family (the kitten loves to cuddle) and can't be a great thing for her. What can we do?

Answer:
hmmm.....I was thinking if the poor baby was in a cage before you got her, that may have been the only soft spot she had...it may be routine for her
Try putting a pillow by the litter box and see if she chooses that instead next time. Then slowly move the pillow to a different spot.

Answer:
I also had that happen with two of the kittens I have had in the past...and I do think it was due to it being the only soft spot in the cages they had been in until they came to me. All I can say is that one of my kittens quickly got over it once she became more confident and realized there were so many other comfy places to sleep instead, the other kitten was very very sick and ended up having to be pts (but he had vomitting and diahrea, etc as well as the litter box behaviour). So if the kitten is healthy, just give it some time and offer it plenty of comfy litterbox alternatives, a towel in a shoebox was always a favorite around here. (I think they also kind of like that box kind of atmosphere.)

Answer:
have you tried putting a comfy shoebox (or something like it) with a little blanket in there or something, right next to the box? he couldn't possibly prefer the litter box over that, could he?

Answer:
Maybe if you have a travel kennel you could put a blanket in it and leave the door open. My cats love to sleep in my puppies kennel.

Answer:
Tough one, I never experianced this.
I would suggest supplying a comfy soft bed, and put her on it. If she stays, give her a treat (doggy reards, but still works!)
You could buy a spray to stop her from sleeping there, but that might stop her peeing in the box.
Good luck

Answer:
I have experienced this before, but with a much younger kitten. She would use the box but also sleep in it, play in it. After a while she just stopped.
Putting a pillow or something of the like next to the box is a very good idea.
The only other time I've seen this kind of thing was in a pet store or shelter. :(
