Pug Serious Condition After Rabie Shot

Question:
My daughter took her three year old Pug for her rabies shot. She was fine prior to the shot however she threw up and passed out in the car she took her to the emergency at which time she was began to bleed from the rectum she is in critical condition and has received a blood tranfusion. The vet does not know what is wrong and does not believe that the rabies shot is that problem. Has any one had a similar experienced? or any suggestions?

Answer:
I have no experiance with rabies shots, but after my westie puppy Tally had her jabs, she appeared a little lethargic and her poo was runny and yellow. She soon perked up the next day and now she is fine. Obviously, your case is much more serious. I hope puppy gets better, keep us informed.

Answer:
I have lots of questions........did the vet take the dog's temprature, this is done recatally---possibly a punture of the rectum?? this occured after at the emergency...possiblitity. as for the throwing up does the pug usually travel in a vehicle?? was it car sick or a combination of getting the shots and a car ride.

hopefully you find out what happened, you are doing everything that is possible for this pug

good luck

Answer:
Thank you for your concern and sorry it took so long to reply. As far as your question she does not get car sick however throwing up is common as well as passing out which she did both in the car coming home. We did not get to concern until she starting passing blood and that is when she was taken to the emergency. Yes, her temperature was taken several times a day and she was given mega doses of antibiotics as well as daily transfusions. She had an ultrasound (there was concern about her vital organs shutting down) which there was no damage to organs. She was on an I.V. while in the hospital. When she was brought home she was given several antiobiotics that had to be taken daily and getting her to eat was difficult, but after about three days she started to eat on her own. The Vet does not have any clue to what may have caused her condition, he does not feel that the rabies vaccine had anything to do with it, however I disagree, she was fine up until receiving the vaccine. She has recovered fully at this time and hopefully will stay that way.

Once again thank you for your concern.

Answer:
Very glad your baby is okay that is really strange that it occured after the rabies shot. It would have been my first instict that it had something to do with the shot. Most imoportantly your pup is okay.

Answer:
So glad to hear that everything is fine! Are you still taking your pets to the same vet?? Did they offer any apologies, information, or just try and pass the buck?? Have you been using that vet for a long time?

Answer:
It's unlikely that the rabies vac would have caused this, however it could have been a factor in "setting off" an underlying problem........

Anemia, auto-immune disorder......(these sometimes require blood transfusions) Is it possible that she could have got into any rodenticides?

If "passing out" is common for her, I'd be concerned about a heart defect. Have x-rays been done or an ultrasound that is especially for cardio?

Anyways, I glad that she is okay now It would be nice to find out what's wrong, incase it happens again. (lets hope not)

good luck

Answer:
good to hear that your puggy is ok. just to be on the safe side, ask the vet if they can split the vaccinations into two the next time, that way if there is a reaction to the vaccines it won't be so bad next time if that indeed was the cause. my pug also has to have her vaccinations split, apprently very common in puglets
