When can a new puppy go outside?
Question: When is it safe to let my new puppy Jake outside? He is Chow/Bichon Frise mix, 6.5 weeks old, had first vaccination 5 days ago. Pet clinic says to keep dog inside. It's difficult to housebreak this way with paper, he walks off. (I have a crate for him, but he still has to go on paper in the house). Outside, he will have to go poddy to be brought in. I have a 1 1/2 year old toy poodle, Jasmine, I followed that recommendation with her and now I'm having a hard time to train her to go outside to poddy. Also, I had a stray puppy (followed my son home), we unsuccessfully looked for the owners, then kept the puppy who after a week died in my backyard from Parvo. I gave Jasmine a booster after that. This was 4 months ago; I bleached and cleaned. I want to train Jake and re-train Jasmine to use the backyard not newspaper, but will Jake get sick if I let him outside? Answer: Parvo can stay in an area for a long time, but I'm not sure how long. I'm sure someone else can fill us in on that. I didn't bring my puppy to places frequented by other dogs (including the curb in front of my house) until she had her 3rd set of shots. I did, however, take her into the yard for her potty training. I didn't let her out on her own, however, and brought her right back in when she was done. Then again, I didn't have a dog with Parvo in my yard! That certainly would have changed things! I've also read elsewhere on this board that small dogs can be more difficult to train than large ones. I wouldn't know, since I've never had a small dog. However, I have no idea what your pup will be like - Chow/Bichon you say? That must be one adorable mix!! We'd all love to see pictures! Answer: Parvo can live in the soil for months! You can also bring into the house on your shoes as well. Who gave you a 6 week old puppy? They should be with mother and littermates until at least 8 weeks, and in fact that is the law in many places. Answer: Tally was able to go out 5 days after her second batch of injections. It's still important to avoid germy places and big dog areas. Your puppy can go outside in the garden- just puppy proof it first by checking fences and stuff. Tally now goes to the back door whenever she wants a wee. Answer: I wouldn't take the chance until all vaccinations are complete. Answer: especially since you've had a case of parvo already... be careful! Answer: I agree with Glasslass , I wouldn't take any chances until all the vacinations have been completed. Puppies can pick up things very quickly. Training a dog to poop outside isn't that difficult, plenty of praise and reward is all you need. Just stay outside with them for as long as you can, as soon as they poo then make a big fuss and reward them. You just have to make sure that once you have rewarded and praised for the poo you don't confuse them by keep praising them for following you back inside etc, they get confused really easily. They will soon realise that pooing outside is a good thing and that it makes you happy, they always want to please you. Hope this helps Answer: Copyright © 2007 - 2008 www.tendlife.com
