schnauzer has rash?

Question:
Hi All...

I am having a problem with my pup. since he came back from the groomer 2 weeks ago I've noticed he is scratching more & I looked to find he has a rash on both sides of his stomach. I have been using polysporin on the areas but it does not seem to help much. Would really appreciate some ideas as to what I can use. Being a schnauzer.. he does have dry skin, but it has never been a problem..til now. He is 4 years old.

Thank you,

Answer:
Make sure he hasn't picked up any fleas at the groomer and is getting flea dermatitis. It's been a terrible summer for fleas. Also see if the groomer has changed shampoos or shop cleaners, as schnauzers are allergic to alot of chemicals. They do better with an oatmeal shampoo. How short did the groomer cut him? Sometimes they can get clipper burn. That should clear up quite quickly though.

Good luck

Answer:
Razor burn shouldn't last more than a day or so, unless the dog is scratching the area and causing abrasions. Possibly, the shampoo wasn't rinsed out well enough? Den-Den2 once ripped his cheek open scratching after a groomer clipped too close. I had asked them to use no finer than a #10 blade and they ignored me. I've done my own grooming for the last 25 years or so.

Thx so much for your reply Sammi..

have looked at pup closer now & his fur (where he is scratching?) is turning color ...he is a "salt & pepper" but the fur in that area is now looking reddish...

this sounds like an infection....???

Thx glasslass...
I don't know....but it's really bothering me....& I just want to make it go away....& what's with the fur looking reddish?

Answer:
White poodles (what I'm familiar with) get a reddish color when they have problems with their tear ducts. The fur where the tears travel becomes rusty looking. Also, sometimes their paws when they lick them alot. It's supposedly caused by the oxidation of the acidic tears or saliva. I was just reading about razor burn in a book on grooming. If the clippers are run too long and become hot, and if the dog isn't bathed first, the combination of hot clippers on dirty skin can cause a rash and perhaps infection. If he was bathed first and not rinsed well, that could also be a factor with hot clippers. I wish our furbabies could talk!!!

Answer:
Pure aloe vera gel is also soothing and not harmful if licked.
