Puppy Refuses To Walk On Leash
Question: My westie puppy Tally is old enough to walk now - but we've noticed that she pulls on the leash. She wants to stop and sniff everything. We generally let her, but sometimes she lies down on the floor and lets us slide her along. A walk around the block takes half an hour and if she pulls she chokes, which makes us sound awful to people walking by. She doesn't seem scared of anything, and we just keep trying to pull her along (though gently with comforting words) Does anybody have any advice to how we can train her? Answer: How old is she now. You might want to try using a martingale collar it is similar to a choke chain but it is made of fabric and only uses chain on the top part of the collar so it doesn't hurt their neck or cause damage to small dogs. Sniffing everything in sight is what dogs do. My dog is great on or off lead and he still constantly stops to sniff. I call it information gathering. Also when she is walking nicely stop praise her and give her a treat then carry on she will start to associate walks treat and fun. Keep your training to 5 to 10 minutes at one time do this a few times a day. You also might want to enroll in obedience classes it helps with socialization and learning to not be distracted by other dogs and people Answer: http://www.perfectpaws.com/pup7.html Answer: Copyright © 2007 - 2008 www.tendlife.com
